Imam Elmakili grew up in the capital of Tlemcen during the 15th and 16th century. He dedicated his life for knowledge, preaching, and reforms; he contributed to the spread of the Islamic culture and worked hard to reform the religious, social and political conditions of Muslims. Then he moved to the Sahara because of the political disturbances and the domination of the Jews over the area. He settled in the region of Touate where he headed a reform movement that aimed to adjust and protect the laws of "Sharia" in this region and preserve the Islamic personality of the people of Touate. He also headed a djihadi movement against the Jews and he was able to drive them out because they violated the convention between them and the Muslims of the area. Later, he moved to the west of Sudan to spread his principles and ideas on the basis of the right Islam and his concepts of the Islamic state. His efforts had a great influence on the process of change and reforms that continued till the 19th century.en_US
