Auteur(s): Mohammed Ilyas, Bougoffa

This thesis is based on a sedimentological, stratigraphic, sequential, and paleoenvironmental approach to analyze the Cretaceous formations of Djebels Bourzal and Mlaga, located in the Ziban Mountains (Biskra, Algeria). The main objective is to reconstruct the depositional environments and paleoenvironmental evolutions during the Cretaceous. The analysis is based on the study of microfacies, sedimentological characteristics, and biological components.

The Bourzal Formation (Cenomanian-Turonian) exhibits alternations of limestones, marls, gypsum, and dolomites, revealing shallow marine environments (semi-restricted lagoons, oolitic shoals, and intertidal zones). This dynamic represents a low-angle carbonate ramp, under the influence of sea-level changes. The latter, combined with a semi-arid to arid climate, is considered an essential factor in the distribution of facies and the diversity of marine fauna.

The Ed Delouatt section of Turonian age exhibits alternations of gypsum, massive limestones, and fossiliferous marls, typical of semi-restricted lagoonal intertidal and subtidal environments under the action of tides and storms.

From a paleogeographic perspective, the Biskra region during the Upper Cretaceous was dominated by semi-restricted marine environments, rarely open. Sea-level changes related to climatic and tectonic factors resulted in an impact on the configuration of environments and the distribution of facies.

The Coudait El-Laham section (Barremian-Albian) represents a progressive evolution from littoral-deltaic to stable shallow marine systems. This evolution is marked by a great diversity of facies, ranging from littoral-deltaic deposits to evaporitic restricted environments and shallow marine carbonate formations. The alternations of sandstones, marls, gypsum, and limestones illustrate sea-level oscillations and paleoenvironmental changes during the Barremian-Albian.

Machine Learning Based Geomechanics Prediction While Drilling Using Mud Logging Data: Tight Fractured Quartzites, Rhourde Nouss Field, Algeria

Titre: Machine Learning Based Geomechanics Prediction While Drilling Using Mud Logging Data: Tight Fractured Quartzites, Rhourde Nouss Field, Algeria
Auteur(s): KERMIA, Hanane; ZEDDOURI, Azziez
Résumé: For accurate characterization of petroleum reservoirs and the optimization of drilling and production operations, a comprehensive understanding of the geomechanical properties of rock formations is required, particularly Poisson’s ratio and Young’s modulus, due to their fundamental role in wellbore stability assessment, in-situ stress estimation, drilling performance optimization, and hydraulic fracturing design. However, the estimation of these properties has traditionally relied on direct laboratory measurements on core samples or on sonic and density well logs. These methods are often unavailable or of limited accuracy in tight and naturally fractured reservoirs, owing to poor core recovery, data loss, and the degradation of log quality resulting from complex drilling conditions and the influence of drilling mud.
This thesis aims to develop intelligent machine learning-based frameworks for the continuous and real-time prediction of geomechanical properties, specifically dynamic Poisson’s ratio (DPR) and dynamic Young’s modulus (DE), using drilling data and geophysical well log data. The developed models were trained and validated using 247 data points for DPR prediction and 1894 data points for DE prediction. The tight and naturally fractured El Hamra Quartzite Formation, of Rhourde Nouss field in southeastern Algeria, was selected as a case study for this research.
The main findings of this thesis can be summarized as follows:
    • Dynamic Poisson’s ratio prediction is highly accurate using real-time drilling data, with Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) achieving (R² ≈ 0.856, RMSE0.025, MAE0.019).
    • Dynamic Young’s modulus prediction reaches optimal performance with XGB applied to conventional well logs (R² ≈ 0.963, RMSE ≈ 2.281, MAE ≈ 1.355), particularly after reservoir classification based on borehole diameter CALIPER
    • The innovative CALIPER (borehole diameter)-based reservoir classification strategy improved model accuracy by reducing internal data variability (R² ≈ 0.963, RMSE ≈ 2.281, MAE ≈ 1.355).
    • Using real-time drilling data represents a technical and economic alternative to traditional methods, enhancing decision making and reducing field operation costs.
The results of this thesis confirm the effectiveness of artificial intelligence techniques in achieving accurate geomechanical characterization of complex petroleum reservoirs, including tight and fractured reservoirs, while saving time and effort and reducing costs associated with laboratory testing and conventional logging operations notably when losing of travel time (∆t). Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of integrating operational data with intelligent models as a modern and promising approach for developing more efficient and reliable reservoir evaluation strategies in contemporary petroleum engineering.;

Titre: Hydrogeological and hydrochemical study of groundwater in the Béni Ounif region (SW Algeria)
Auteur(s): ARFA, Abdellah; ZEDDOURI, Aziez
Résumé: This research focuses on the Beni Ounif region, located in the southwest of Algeria, covering an area of 42,730 km² with an estimated population of 13,000 inhabitants. The primary goal of this study is to enhance the understanding of the hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry of the Beni Ounif aquifers through a series of hydrogeological investigations and analyses of groundwater samples collected from the area. The results identify three main aquifers: the Continental Intercalary (CI) aquifer, which is the most significant with a thickness varying between 100 m and 300 m; above it, the Turonian aquifer, which is of lesser interest in the region; and the superficial free aquifer, composed of Quaternary alluvium, varying in thickness from 300 m to 380 m. Water quality assessments using the Water Quality Index (WQI) revealed that the water quality of the superficial aquifer is predominantly good, with portions classified as mediocre (6.67%) and excellent (13.33%). The water from the CI aquifer was primarily deemed suitable for consumption. Agricultural suitability was assessed using the Irrigation Water Quality Index (IWQI), rating most groundwater samples as good or excellent. Industrial evaluations focused on the water's corrosive potential and scaling capacity, highlighting some samples requiring treatment to meet industrial standards. Additionally, hydrochemical signatures and mineralization processes were extensively studied using Piper, Schoeller, and Gibbs diagrams, along with binary diagrams and saturation index calculations. These analyses indicated that mineralization is primarily influenced by the weathering of silicates and carbonates, the dissolution of evaporites, cation exchange, and anthropogenic inputs, primarily affecting water chemistry in these aquifers. This comprehensive understanding aids in the effective management and use of groundwater resources in the Beni Ounif region. The Beni Ounif region faces increasing water demand (8.46 million m³/year), met by a transfer project delivering 30,000 m³/day from the Albien aquifer, while also being highly vulnerable to floods affecting over 241 hectares. An integrated strategy is recommended, including early warning systems, infrastructure reinforcement, urban planning regulations, community awareness, and sustainable water management.

Titre: Geochemical assessment of the Paleozoic hot shale in Ahnet Basin Algeria, and its implications in unconventional resource development.
Auteur(s): DEKMOUCHE, Riad Imededdine
Résumé: This study presents a comprehensive geochemical and geomechanical assessment of Frasnian shale from three wells situated in the Ahnet Basin, southwestern Algeria. Through Rock- Eval analysis and palynofacies examination, the Gas Ratio technique, the rock’s mechanical elastic properties, and mineralogical properties. The research explores the thermal maturity, organic richness, and hydrocarbon potential of the shale, while also shedding light on the depositional environment, sources of organic matter, and preservation conditions. At the same time, confirming these results by identifying the tendency, types, and contacts of hydrocarbon fluids. Also illuminating Brittleness indices through several methods. The findings offer a comprehensive understanding of the organic matter within the Frasnian shale, which could significantly boost the exploration and exploitation of unconventional resources in the region.
In the first well, most samples revealed medium to excellent total organic carbon (TOC) content, but with limited potential hydrocarbons, indicating varying stages of gas-phase maturation. Conversely, the second well showed good to excellent TOC content with low hydrocarbons potential, indicating a more advanced stage of maturation, particularly within the dry gas phase. In contrast, the third well displays core samples rich in organic matter. However, both free and residual hydrocarbon potentials are low, suggesting potential for gas or dry gas. Microscopic analysis further confirmed the wells' maturity levels, with the organic material primarily originating from mixed marine Type II sources.
Geomechanically, the first well exhibited the highest brittleness among the three wells, followed by the second well, while the third well showed the lowest values. These insights are crucial for assessing the hydrocarbon potential and maturation stages in the Ahnet Basin, as well as the rock brittleness potential for hydrofracturing and identifying optimal completion areas, or "sweet spots," making them essential for practical resource evaluation and exploitation.
The evaluation results of wells X1, X2, and X3 concluded that X1 and X2 have better petroleum potential and fracking suitability than X3.
