Titre: The Effect of Explicit vs. Implicit Instruction on Algerian EFL Learners’ Production of Complaints
Auteur(s): Saida Tobbi
Résumé: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of two approaches of instruction (explicit vs. implicit) on Algerian EFL learners’ production of complaints. Moreover, it sought to know whether or not gender affects the participants’ pragmatic production of the speech act in focus. Two intact third-year English-major groups (40 students) participated in the study. Each group consists of 29 girls and 11 boys. The pretest and posttest data were collected through a ten-item discourse completion test. Both groups’ production of complaints was analyzed using a holistic rating scale to evaluate the overall appropriateness of language use. The results revealed that the explicit group significantly improved in the posttest over the pretest, greatly outperforming the implicit group. Additionally, there is no significant difference between the males and females of the implicit group. However, in the explicit group, gender came out to exert a significant impact on the way male and female participants produced the speech act of complaining.

Résumé: This study aimed at cognitive didactics which mainly focuses on modern cognitive research. The rapid development of neuroscience in recent decades has brought applications that are both possible and relevant to the world of education. Indeed, while brain science deals with the processes on which learning is based, education aims to apply it in concrete life, in particular in pedagogical life. However, although the bridges are clear between these two systems, neuroscience is still evolving in the world of education. So, it is important to work on attention, to what extent educational neurosciences effective and contributory are in the learning process, can they support learners to learn better?

Titre: Probing ESP Teaching Context: Case of Biology Learners at Ibn-khaldoun University, Tiaret, Algeria
Auteur(s): Saraa Nadia
Résumé: This study attempts to investigate the ESP teaching situation in the biology department of the University of Tiaret, where the absence of syllabuses, possibly essential for both educators and learners, was observed. In addition, the non-existence of these teaching documents has influenced the ESP teaching process and it is partly responsible for learners‟ low level in English language proficiency. In this light, this study aims at designing an ESP syllabus and hopefully improving the quality of teaching for this research context. A students‟ needs analysis questionnaire, and an interview with teachers were employed to collect data about the students‟ objectives, wants, preferences, as well the materials to be adopted for the teaching and the learning of the content of the syllabus. Ultimately and on the basis of this enquiry, a standard ESP syllabus was devised for this research population.
