Abstract: refers to styles historically associated with Africain cultures. It plays a major role in the identity and politics of black culture in the United States through time. In this dissertation, the purpose is to show the role of the Afro-American poetry and the endeavor of the Afro-American poets in granting help to people. Their effort consists in rekindling Afro-American people’s self-consciousness. In reality, dealing with the Afro-American poetry does not only imply the treatment of themes related to the Black problems and grievances, but also to show the value of this type of literature or genre which is poetry and its impact on both the reader or the listener
