Symbolism in Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery

Abstract

Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery is a worthy symbolic short story .We can achieve its important meanings by decoding its symbols. In addition, this study aims to shed light on the writer’s motives behind using a symbol as a rhetorical device due that many items of this literary work have a significant symbolic meaning, as well as to shed light on Symbolism as a movement and a theory and evaluate its effectiveness. We hypothesized that Shirley Jackson uses symbolism to create ambiguity and complexity that the reader should aspire to reach a higher intellectual level and understand the depth meanings under the surface. This study will also look into the author's social implications in the story , taking into mind the historical period. We followed a descriptive-analytical method to conduct this study because this method is suitable to examine the symbols used in the story. A number of conclusions are presented at the end of this study.
