Racial Identity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah

Abstract

Adichie’s Americanahis one of the contemporary novels of African literature, which was published in 2013. It revolves around the protagonist Ifemelu, a Nigerian young girl, who moved to America to attend university. She went through a long period of depression and often feels like an outsider because of racism. Delving in the journey of reading Americanah, readers may notice a salient change in Ifemelu’s character and identity from a person totally unaware of race and racism to a person strongly affected by them, after moving to America. Readers may wonder how Adichie represents the relationship between identity and race, what factors contributed in Ifemelu’s racial identity development,and how has it been manifested. It is hypothesized that Adichie tries to rebuild the relationship between identity and race through reconstructing Ifemelu’s identity on racial discrimination experiences. Adichie highlights both the internal and external factors contributing in Ifemelu’s racial identity development. The latter has been manifested in Ifemelu’s change from unawareness of race to a strong sense of her racial identity. The research’s main aim was to investigate the psychological effects of racism on black Africans’ identity as new-experience immigrants in a white hegemonic society. Hence, the research was conducted through the lenses of Cross and Fhagen-Smith’s racial identity theory. After conducting the analysis, this study reveals the following: there is a reciprocal relationship between identity and race, there are both internal and external factors contributing in Ifemelu’s racial identity development, which is manifested through her long journey of identity struggle.

"Americana " de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie est l’ un des romans de la littérature Africaine contemporaine, publiés en 2013. Le roman tourne autour du personnage de la jeune fille Nigériane "Ifimelo," qui a déménagé aux États-Unis pour aller à l’université. "Ifimelo" a souffert d’une longue période de dépression où elle se sentait mécontente par le racisme. En lisant le roman "Americana", le lecteur remarque un changement apparent dans le caractère de "Ifimelo" et son identité d’une personne ignorant la race et le racisme à une personne profondément influencée par eux après avoir déménagé aux États-Unis d’Amérique. Les lecteurs du roman peuvent être surpris de la façon dont l’auteur a représenté la relation entre la race et l’identité, quels facteurs ont contribué à l’évolution de l’identité raciale d’Ifimelo, et quelles sont ses manifestations. Les hypothèses suivantes ont été avancées : Adichie généralement a essayé de construire la relation entre l’identité et la race en tenant compte de la construction de l’identité d’Ifimelo et l’expérience de la discrimination raciale. Adichie a souligné les facteurs internes et externes contribuant au développement de l’identité raciale d’Ifimelo. Les manifestations de ce dernier étaient évidentes dans le changement d’Ifimelo de la race inconsciente à un fort sentiment d’identité raciale. L’objectif principal de cette étude est d’examiner les effets psychologiques de la discrimination raciale sur l’identité des Africains noirs en tant que nouveaux immigrants dans une société dominée par les blancs. Pour cela, cette étude a été réalisée à travers l’optique de la théorie de "l’identité raciale de Cross et Figuen Smith." L’étude a finalement trouvé les résultats suivants : il y a une corrélation entre la race et l’identité, facteurs internes et externes qui ont contribué à l’évolution de l’identité raciale d’Ifimelo, qui s’est manifestée à travers son long voyage de conflit avec l’identité.

تعتبر "أميريكانا" للكاتبة "شيماماندا نغوزي أديشي" واحدة من روايات الأدب الافريقي المعاصر والتي نُشرت سنة 2013. تدور الرواية حول شخصية الفتاة النيجيرية " ايفيميلو" التي انتقلت الى الولايات المتحدة الامريكية لتلتحق بالجامعة. عانت "ايفيميلو" من فترة اكتئاب طويلة حيث كانت تشعر بعدم الانتماء بسبب العنصرية. عند قراءة رواية "أميريكانا" يلاحظ القارئ تغيرا ظاهرا في شخصية "ايفيميلو" وهويتها من شخص غير واعي بالعِرق والعنصرية الى شخص شديد التأثر بهما، وذلك بعد انتقالها الى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. قد يتساءل قرّاء الرواية كيف جسدت الكاتبة العلاقة بين العِرق والهوية، ما العوامل التي ساهمت في تطور هوية "ايفيميلو" العِرقية، وماهي مظاهر ذلك. من أجل ذلك تم طرح الفرضيات التالية:حاولت "أديشي" بناء العلاقة بين الهوية والعِرق من خلال اعاة بناء هوية " ايفيميلو" عن طريق تجربتها في التمييز العنصري. ألقت "أديشي" الضوء على العوامل الداخلية والخارجية المساهمة في تطور الهوية العرقية عند " ايفيميلو". وقد تجلت مظاهر هذه الاخيرة في تغير " ايفيميلو" من اللاوعي بالعِرق الى الشعور القوي بهويتها العِرقية. هدف الباحث الرئيسي من هذه الدراسة هو فحص الآثار النفسية للتمييز العنصري على هوية الأفارقة السُّود كمهاجرين جدد في مجتمع تغلب عليه هيمنة البِيض. من هنا، تمت هذه الدراسة من خلال عدسة نظرية "الهوية العِرقية لِكروس وفيغن سميث". خلُصت الدراسة في الأخير الى النتائج التالية: هناك علاقة متبادلة بين العِرق والهوية، هناك عوامل داخلية وخارجية ساهمت في تطور هوية "ايفيميلو" العرقية والتي تجلت من خلال رحلة صراعها الطويل مع الهوية
