The Posttraumatic Experience of WWII on the American Character in Shirley Jackson's “The Lottery” and “Charles”

Abstract

WWII was a bloody war. It led to great changes on the economic, social, cultural and psychological levels on human life around world. The present study throws light on the atrocities of WWII on the American society as it suffered from instable personalities and traumatizing childhood experiences one hand and focuses on the psychological effects of this war on the American people on the other aiming to reveal and shed light on the dark side of American life after that terrible period. This study follows the psychodynamic theory of Melanie Klein (1882-1960) and her object relations theory to recognize the importance of the earliest childhood experiences in the formation of adult’s psychological world. This theory is applied on the American writer Shirley Jackson’s two short stories: “The Lottery” (1948) and “Charles” (1948) to investigate the way in which are her stories a mirror that reflect the behaviour of the American character and their psychological side. Better, the analysis through Kleinian theory reveals how Americans believed in the idea of goodness while evil was engendered in their mentality and their beliefs

Cette recherche porte sur les effets psychologiques de la seconde guerre mondiale sur le peuple américain. Son objectif est de révéler et de faire la lumière sur le côté sombre de la vie des Américains après cette terrible période. Cette recherche suit la théorie psychodynamique de Mélanie Klein (1882-1960) « théorie des relations d'objet » pour reconnaître l'importance des premières expériences de l'enfance dans la formation du monde psychologique de l'adulte. Cette théorie est appliquée sur les deux nouvelles de l'écrivaine américaine Shirley Jackson "La Loterie" (1948), et "Charles" (1948) pour manifester comment ce corpus est un miroir de la part psychologique du personnage américain. Aussi ; montrer comment les œuvres de Shirley Jackson reflètent les atrocités de la guerre mondiale sur la génération américaine ; à cause de la Seconde Guerre mondiale destructrice et dévastatrice qui a eu lieu de 1939 à 1945. Cette guerre sanglante a provoqué de grands changements dans le monde global. Elle a des effets économiques, sociaux, culturels et psychologiques atroces sur les vies humaines dans le monde entier. Cette étude montre que la société américaine souffrait de personnalités instables et d'expériences infantiles traumatisantes ; de plus, l'analyse par la théorie kleinienne révèle que la façon dont les Américains croyaient en l'idée du bien alors que le mal était engendré dans leur mentalité et leurs croyances.

تُركز هذه الدراسة على تأثير الحرب العالمية الثانية على الجانب النفسي للأمريكيين وتهدف هذه الدراسة إلى اظهار وتسليط الضوء على الجانب المظلم لحياة الأمريكيين بعد هذه الفترة المأساوية. تتبع هذه الدراسة ما يسمى بالنظرية الديناميكية النفسية ليميلاني كلاين وتسمى هذه النظرية بنظرية علاقات الكائن، وذلك بهدف التعرف على أهمية التجارب المبكرة للطفولة في تكوين العالم النفسي للبالغين. وطُبقت هذه النظرية على نوعين من القصص القصيرة للكاتبة الأمريكية " شيرلي جاكسون" تحت عنوان "اليانصيب " 1948و " تشارلز" 1948وذلك لإظهار كيف كانت هذه الأخيرة المرآة العاكسة للجانب النفسي للشخصية الأمريكية، كما أن أعمال وكتابات الكاتبة الأمريكية شيرلي جاكسون " تُبين وتعكس في طياتها الأعمال الوحشية للحرب العالمية الثانية على الجيل الأمريكي وذلك لما خلفته الحرب المدمرة والتي تراوحت مدتها ما بين الفترتين 1939-1945 وكان وراء هذه الحرب الدامية الكثير من التغيرات العالمية على جميع الأصعدة والمستويات منها التغيرات الاجتماعية، الاقتصادية، التفافية وحتى النفسية تتبع هذه الدراسة النظرية الديناميكية النفسية لميلاني كلاين والتي أظهرت بدورها كيف كان اعتقاد الأمريكيين حول فكرة الخير في حين أن الشر سيطر و غلب على أفكارهم وشخصيتهم ومعتقداتهم
