The Novel as a Repository of Social Conscience

Abstract

This dissertation studies Charles Dickens’s novella A Christmas Carol from a socio-cultural approach. A Christmas Carol is one of Dickens’s five Christmas books in which Dickens faithfully portrayed poor people’s lives as well as their feelings in such a special day that is Christmas. This dissertation focuses not only on Christmas but also on Victorian Britain which was the location of the events that pushed Dickens to write incredible works including A Christmas Carol. The novella under study is considered like many of Dickens’s works as a repository of social conscience. This study contains three chapters. The first chapter is divided into three sections. The first section deals with culture and society during the Victorian era. The second section deals with Christmas being more than a religious celebration. The third section deals with Charles Dickens’s personal and social life and its relation with the novella, as well as criticism on his novella. The second chapter examines Christmas in Dickens’s A Christmas Carol and its effects on the social conscience, beside general analysis of the novella. The third chapter examines the extent of Dickens’s faithfulness in portraying the British socio-cultural context.

Cette thèse études la nouvelle de Charles Dickens Un Chant de Noel d’une approche socio-culturelle. Un Chant de Noel est l’un des cinq œuvres de Noel de Charles Dickens dans lequel Dickens fidèlement dépeint la vie des pauvres ainsi que leurs sentiments en ce jour si spécial qu’est Noel. Cette thèse se concentre non seulement sur Noel, mais aussi sur la Grande Bretagne Victorienne qui était le lieu des événements qui ont poussé Dickens à écrire des œuvres incroyables, notament Un Chant de Noel. La nouvelle à l’étude est considérée comme de nombreuses œuvres de Dickens comme un dépositaire de la conscience social. Cette thèse contient trois chapitres. Le premier chapitre est divisé en trois sections. La première section traite de la culture et de la société à l’époque victorienne. La deuxième section traite de Noel plus qu’une fête religieuse. La troisième section traite de la vie personnelle et sociale de Charles Dickens et de sa relation avec la nouvelle, ainsi que des critiques sur sa nouvelle. Le deuxième chapitre examine Noel dans Un Chant de Noel de Dickens et ses effets sur la conscience sociale à côté de l’analyse générale de la nouvelle. La troisième chapitre examine l’étendue de la fidélité de Dickens dans la description du contexte socioculturelle britannique.

يدرس هذا البحث رواية " ترنيمة عيد الميلاد " للكاتب تشارلز ديكنز من منهج اجتماعي ثقافي. "ترنيمة عيد الميلاد" هي واحدة من بين خمسة أعمال عن عيد الميلاد لتشارلز ديكنز أين مثل بإخلاص حياة الفقراء و مشاعرهم في أهم يوم ألا و هو عيد الميلاد. هذا البحث لا يركز فقط على عيد الميلاد و حسب بل يركز أيضا على بريطانيا خلال العصر الفيكتوري و التي كانت مقر الأحداث التي دفعت ديكنز إلى كتابة أعمال رائعة من ضمنها "ترنيمة عيد الميلاد". الرواية التي يدرسها هذا البحث مثل كل أعمال تشارلز ديكنز تعتبر كمحتوى للضمير الاجتماعي. يتكون هذا البحث من أربعة فصول. ينقسم الفصل الأول إلى قسمين؛ يتناول القسم الأول الثقافة و المجتمع خلال الفيكتوري، أما القسم الثاني فيتناول عيد الميلاد و كونه أكثر من مجرد احتفال ديني. يتناول الفصل الثاني حياة تشارلز ديكنز الشخصية و الاجتماعية و علاقتها بالرواية كما يتطرق أيضا إلى عرض بعض الانتقادات حول روايته. يدرس الفصل الثالث رواية "ترنيمة عيد الميلاد" و تأثيرها على الضمير الاجتماعي بالإضافي تحليل الرواية. أما الفصل الأخير فيدرس مدى إخلاص تشارلز ديكنز في تصوير السياق الاجتماعي الثقافي البريطاني.
