The Clash Between the Puritan and the Romantic Selves in Edward Taylor and Emily Dickinson’s Selected Poems

Abstract

This study is a thematic analysis of Emily Dickinson and Edward Taylor’s two selected poems, these two poets are known to be both Romantic and Puritan writers respectively, Both the Romantic and the Puritan movements in the American literature has impacted many poets and writers such as Edward Taylor and Emily Dickinson. By both of them being influenced by some concepts they were raised on and influenced by, they were both impacting these concepts into pieces of writing in their poetry, portraying their thoughts and way of thinking in their piece of writings. In Taylor’s poetry he embraced Romantic aspects into his Puritan theology, the same goes for Dickinson, she also embraced the Puritan theology in her romantic writings. Focusing in these two ideas, we will shed light on the both psychological and historical aspects, with the help of Melanie Klein Object Relations Theory, that emphasizes importance of the early childhood experiences on the adulthood life and shaping their words, and the New Historicism literary theory, that argue that literature should be both understood and interpreted within its historical and cultural context by examining both the perception and the reception. These two theories are applied on the American poets Edward Taylor and Emily Dickinson’s poems, “I Am the Living Bread: Meditation8” by Edward Taylor, and “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” by Emily Dickinson to. This study is an investigation towards these two poets to prove the clash that happened within both of them as a clash between the concepts and rules they were raised on as children, and the facts they realized by discovering the world while they became adults. Also, studying their poems within historical context and analyzing the poems based on the circumstances that are around the poets.

Cette étude constitue une analyse thématique de deux poèmes sélectionnés d'Emily Dickinson et d'Edward Taylor. Ces deux poètes sont respectivement reconnus comme représentants des courants littéraires romantique et puritain. Les mouvements romantique et puritain ont eu une influence considérable sur la littérature américaine, affectant des écrivains et poètes tels qu'Edward Taylor et Emily Dickinson. Ayant été imprégnés de concepts issus de leur éducation, ces deux auteurs ont incorporé ces notions dans leurs œuvres poétiques, exprimant ainsi leurs pensées et leur vision du monde.

Dans la poésie de Taylor, on observe une intégration des aspects romantiques dans sa théologie puritaine. De même, Dickinson a intégré des éléments de théologie puritaine dans ses écrits romantiques. En nous focalisant sur ces deux idées, nous mettrons en lumière les aspects psychologiques et historiques de leurs œuvres, en nous appuyant sur la théorie des relations d'objet de Melanie Klein, qui met en avant l'importance des expériences de la petite enfance dans la vie adulte et la formation du discours, ainsi que sur la théorie littéraire du nouveau historicisme, qui préconise que la littérature doit être comprise et interprétée dans son contexte historique et culturel, en examinant tant la perception que la réception des œuvres.

Ces deux théories seront appliquées aux poèmes des auteurs américains Edward Taylor et Emily Dickinson, à savoir "I Am the Living Bread : Meditation 8" de Taylor et "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" de Dickinson. Cette étude vise à explorer le conflit interne chez ces deux poètes, qui se manifeste comme une tension entre les concepts et règles inculqués durant leur enfance et les réalités découvertes à l'âge adulte. Elle examine également leurs poèmes dans leur contexte historique et analyse les œuvres en fonction des circonstances entourant les auteurs.

تعتبر هذه الدراسة تحليلا موضوعاتي لقصيدتين مختارتين لإيميلي ديكنسون ولإدوارد تايلور. بحيث يُعرف هذان الشاعران بكونهما يمثلان الحركتين الرومانسية و التطهيرية على التوالي. و لقد أثرت كل من الحركتين بشكل كبير على الأدب الأمريكي، مما انعكس تأثيره على العديد من الشعراء والكتاب مثل إدوارد تايلور وإيميلي ديكنسون. بحيث أن كل منهما تأثر بالمفاهيم التي نَشَأَ عليها، مما انعكس في أعمالهما الشعرية، حيث عبرا عن أفكارهما وطريقة تفكيرهما من خلال كتابتهما. يمكن رؤية تأثير المذهب "البيوريتاني" ضمن إطار الكتابات الرومانسية والشعرية لكل من تايلور و ديكنسون. و ستتمحور هذه الدراسة وتركز على هاته الفكرة من خلال تسليط الضوء على الجوانب النفسية والتاريخية باستخدام نظرية "" لميلاني كلاين، التي تؤكد على أهمية تجارب الطفولة المبكرة في تشكيل حياة البالغين ولغتهم، ونظرية "التاريخية الجديدة" ، التي تشدد على ضرورة فهم الأدب وتفسيره ضمن سياقه التاريخي والثقافي من خلال فحص كل من التصور والتلقي. وسيتم تطبيق هاتان النظريتان على قصائد الشاعرين الأمريكيين إدوارد تايلور وإيميلي ديكنسون، "أنا الخبز الحي: التأمل الثامن" لإيدوارد تايلور، و "لأنني لم أستطع التوقف للموت" لإيميلي ديكنسون. وبهذا المنوال ستهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف الصراع الداخلي الذي عاناه الشاعران، والذي يتمثل في التناقض بين المفاهيم والقواعد التي نشأوا عليها كأطفال، والحقائق التي اكتشفوها عندما أصبحوا بالغين. كما تتناول الدراسة قصائدهم ضمن السياق التاريخي وتحليلها بناءً على الظروف المحيطة بالشعراء.
