The Digital Custody: Cultural Perspectives on AI Generated Literature and Cultural Heritage Preservation

Abstract

The field of artificial Intelligence (AI) has witnessed development and has important impacts on different life sectors including literature generation. Since it was first referenced to in L. Frank Baum's 1900 book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" AI has attracted the attention for its potential to humanize machines and focus on non-routine tasks that demand the human intervention as its active role in creating art is intensively growing. The development of platforms like OpenAI's ChatGPT offers the opportunity to users to effortlessly generate images, music, videos even text that sound like if they were human-made. The present research delves into the cultural implications of machine literature focusing on how it safeguards and promotes cultural heritage. Utilizing Stuart Hall's cultural studies framework, the present study also explores the literary devices and cultural considerations in the AI-generated short story "Echoes of the Oasis" by ChatGPT 3.5. This research aims to shed light on the gap in cultural studies and AI-generated stories focusing on their contribution to cultural heritage preservation.

Le domaine de l'intelligence artificielle a connu un développement ayant un impact considérable sur divers secteurs de la vie, y compris la création littéraire. Depuis sa première mention dans le livre de L. Frank Baum "Le Magicien d'Oz" en 1900, l'intelligence artificielle a attiré l'attention pour sa capacité à humaniser les machines et à se concentrer sur des tâches non routinières qui nécessitaient auparavant l'intervention humaine. Son rôle actif dans la production d'œuvres artistiques augmente de manière intensive, avec des plateformes comme ChatGPT d'OpenAI permettant aux utilisateurs de créer des images, de la musique, des vidéos et même des textes littéraires qui semblent écrits par des auteurs humains. Mon étude actuelle aborde les implications culturelles de la littérature générée par les machines, en mettant l'accent sur la manière dont elle protège et renforce le patrimoine culturel. En utilisant le cadre des études culturelles de Stuart Hall, mon étude explore également les dispositifs littéraires et les considérations culturelles dans les nouvelles générées par l'intelligence artificielle, avec comme exemple la nouvelle "Échos de l'Oasis" générée par ChatGPT 3.5 Mon étude vise également à combler le fossé dans les études culturelles concernant ce type d'histoires en mettant l'accent sur leur contribution à la préservation du patrimoine culturel.
