Abstract: The study aimed to identify and know the level of students ‘competence in mastering the critical reading skills , the sample consisted of 100 male and female learner who were chosen at random and haphazardly from some of Chlef Province high schools for the academic year 2014/2015, and in order to achieve the objectives of the study, a critical reading skills list was prepared in order to determine the necessary skills for the learners , and in the light of this ,a test of critical reading skills was built, after taking the percentage of the agreement that exceeds 90% of the arbitrators’ views ,it has been reached to six necessary critical reading skills for the second year high school learners , and after the application of tools of the study, the results showed up the poor level of the learners in the critical reading skills where the average of student’s performance got further with percentage of 46.72% from the standard which was defined in this study by80% , and the lack of differences between the average scores of male and female average in the level of critical reading skills.
