From Social Discrimination to Cultural Integration: Erin Gruwell’s Endeavour towards the Subversion of the American Social Order in The Freedom Writers Diary

Abstract

The current social reality in America is so controversial and so paradoxical to the point whereby people have started looking for alternative ways to deal with it. The other intellectual actions is one of the ways along which one goes to meet the challenges of the socio-political system in America, through writing, might be very interesting. Writing enables one to deal with his experience and to understand others’ experiences. Therefore writing might be a key tool to set a sort of social criticism. Erin Gruwell, a young teacher, has tried to enhance change among a group of young people who are the image of the actual American society which is characterised by racism among individuals belonging to the same group and towards other members belonging to different categories. These are two facets of racism, which make of America a particular society regardless of its alleged nature (melting pot where different cultures do communicate). Gruwell’s endeavour consists in creating a horizontal view among her group of students who are, supposedly, a future model of the American society by means of writing and reading poems.La réalité sociale actuelle en Amérique est si controversée et si paradoxale au point par lequel les gens ont commencé à chercher des façons alternatives de le traiter. Les autres actions intellectuelles sont une des façons le long lesquelles va relever les défis du système sociopolitique en Amérique, par l'écriture, pourrait être très intéressante. L'écriture à permet de traiter son expérience et comprendre des expériences d'autres. Donc l'écriture pourrait être un outil clé pour mettre une sorte de critique sociale. Erin Gruwell, un jeune professeur, a essayé d'améliorer le changement parmi un groupe de jeunes qui sont l'image de la société américaine réelle qui est caractérisée par le racisme parmi des individus appartenant au même groupe et vers d'autres membres appartenant aux catégories différentes. Ce sont deux facettes du racisme, qui font de l'Amérique une société particulière, indépendamment de sa nature présumée (creuset où différentes cultures ne communiquer). L'effort de Gruwell consiste dans la création d'une vue horizontale parmi son groupe d'étudiants qui sont, censément, un modèle futur de la société américaine par le biais de l'écriture et la lecture de poèmes.
