Considering Cultural Schemata in Interpreting Charles Dickens 'Novel Oliver Twist

Abstract

Culture is agreed to be a major element in the comprehension of literary texts but it did not take the needed attention from teachers especially in the field of foreign languages in literary courses. For that, this study was conducted to show the importance of possessing the cultural schemata by EFL learners in the process of reading literary works. Because of the richness of the British culture, we have chosen one of the outstanding novels ‘Oliver Twist’ written by Charles Dickens to reach our aim. Different types of sources about the British society around the beginning of the 19th were read and analysed to obtain the cultural elements from including the social, political and economical conditions of that period and the same with the novel regarding the principles of the two theories applied: New Historicism and Cultural Materialism. From this study, we conclude that cultural schemata has a major role in interpreting literary texts and enhancing the readers' comprehension.La culture est accepté d'être un élément majeur dans la compréhension de textes littéraires, mais il n'a pas pris l'attention nécessaire de la part des enseignants en particulier dans le domaine des langues étrangères dans les cours littéraires. Pour cela, cette étude a été menée pour montrer l'importance de posséder les schèmas culturels par les apprenants dans le processus de lecture des œuvres littéraires. En raison de la richesse de la culture britannique, nous avons choisi l'un des romans remarquables Oliver Twist écrits par Charles Dickens pour atteindre notre objectif. Différents types de sources au sujet de la société britannique vers le début du 19e ciècle ont été lues et analysées afin d'obtenir les éléments culturels d'inclure les conditions sociales, politiques et économiques de cette période et la même chose avec le roman sur les principes des deux théories appliquées: New historicisme et matérialisme culturel. De cette étude, nous concluons que les schèmas culturels ont un rôle majeur dans l'interprétation des textes littéraires et d'améliorer la compréhension du lecteur.
