Violence in Post-Apartheid South Africa in Nadine Gordimer’s Novel: The House Gun

Abstract

This dissertation seeks to give a better understanding of the direct and indirect causes and consequences behind violence in Post-apartheid South Africa through a study of the content of Nadine Gordimer’s novel The House Gun. For the purpose at hand, we discuss in the first chapter: the historical, social, and personal backgrounds by focusing the most important events in the history of South Africa. In order to show the effects of the apartheid system on the South African society because Nadine Gordimer was the loudest voice that spoke about the state of the society to South Africa and to the world. In the second chapter, we discuss the main themes of Post apartheid South African literature. After that, in the third chapter we look at the ways in which violence has been an inherent consequence of the apartheid era. That was violent and segregative period and in the last chapter, we show how it is an obstacle in face of the efforts of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which was trying to stop the increase of violence in South Africa from the apartheid era until now.

Cette thèse vise à donner une meilleure compréhension des causes et des conséquences derrière la violence en Afrique du Sud Post-apartheid directs et indirects à travers une étude du contenu du roman de Nadine Gordimer The House Gun. Aux fins à portée de main, nous discutons dans le premier chapitre: les contextes historiques, sociaux et personnels en se concentrant événements les plus importants dans l'histoire de l'Afrique du Sud. Afin de montrer les effets du système d'apartheid sur la société sud-africaine parce que Nadine Gordimer est la voix la plus forte qui a parlé de l'état de la société en Afrique du Sud et au monde. Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous examinons les principaux thèmes de la littérature sud-africaine post apartheid. Après cela, dans le troisième chapitre, nous examinons les façons dont la violence a été une conséquence inhérente de l'ère de l'apartheid. Ce fut la période violente et ségrégative et dans le dernier chapitre, nous montrons comment il est un obstacle devant les efforts de la Commission Vérité et Réconciliation, qui essayait d'arrêter l'augmentation de la violence en Afrique du Sud de l'ère de l'apartheid jusqu'à maintenant.
