The free surface flows are generally modelled by the Saint Venant equations. However, these equations were established for the cases of 1D flows and channels with negligible bottom slope or nearly horizontal. But it is that in reality, one is often brought to study flows in channels with variable slope, such as the spillways chutes, which implies impossibility of using the equations quoted previously. Consequently, the equations of Saint Venant will be generalized initially with the case of the steeply sloping flows, and in the second time, with the case of the unsteady 2D flows. The system of equations thus obtained, will be solved numerically by using the MacCormack explicit finite differences scheme. The elaborate numerical model will be subjected to the test while proposing to analyze a two-dimensional torrential unsteady flow through a rectangular spillways chute having a rather significant bottom slope. |
