Abstract

The present research aims at studying the correlation and the contradiction between theory and practice in the modern Arab lexicology. On the one hand, once reviewing the literature, many theoretical studies and research works crop up; including originally Arab and translated ones, conducted by scholars, linguistic or lexical institutions in the form of books, theses, articles, scientific and linguistic conferences, etc. On the other hand, neither dictionaries nor projects that really bring theory into practice regarding the practical side of lexicology are found. In fact, several proposals and ideas to accomplish one dictionary were suggested. However, there is an utter lack of a reliable theory. The latter, then, is what this research attempts to identify and clarify through the study of the Arab efforts put to compile the historical dictionary of the Arab language.
