Dark Romanticism in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of The House of Usher

Abstract

The dark romantic movement is a turning point in the American literature with its characteristics that influenced many American writers. The purpose of this study is to highlight the most important characteristics of this movement and its impact on the outstanding story of Edgar Allan Poe The Fall of the House of Usher and how he used these characteristics to give us a picture of the human psyche and its behavior through the application of Freud's theory that allows to study the psychological strike of the characters and the general mood of the story. To carry out this study we have opted for descriptive analytical method. This study consists of two chapters. The first chapter on the dark romanticism movement and its characteristics and Freud’s psychoanalysis theory, and the second chapter contains the literary study of the story of The Fall of the House of Usher, including the application of the theory of Freud. Based on the study of the dark romanticism in the story, we realize that Poe has really depicted the suffering of isolated people with unstable psyches in his society through a dark atmosphere and a lot of symbols. Thus, the author has various objectives behind writing about this kind of people; he tries to put all the characteristics of that dark movement to show the dark side of people. All in all, we can deduce that Poe has a psychological motive in writing about the fall of the Usher family. Cette étude vise à mettre en évidence les plus importants caractéristiques du mouvement romantisme noir, dans la littérature américaine et une grande influence sur un grand nombre des œuvres littéraires, parmi eux l'histoire de Edgar Allan Poe est un point, d'apprendre comment utiliser ces propriétés pour nous donner une image de la psyché humaine de lors de l'application de la théorie de Freud qui permet d'étudier les troubles psychologiques des personnages et l'ambiance générale de l'histoire. Cette étude se compose de deux chapitres. Le chapitre premier du mouvement romantisme noir et ses caractéristiques et la théorie de la psychanalyse à Freud, le deuxième chapitre contient l'étude littéraire de l'histoire de La Chute de la maison de Usher (The Fall of the House of Usher), y compris l'application de la théorie de Freud. Sur la base de l'étude du l'histoire, nous constatons que Poe nous a montré la souffrance des personnes atteintes instable isolé mentale dans sa communauté dans une atmosphère sombre et beaucoup d'icônes. Ainsi, l'auteur a des objectifs différents derrière pour écrire sur ce genre de personnes, il tente de mettre toutes les caractéristiques de ce sombre mouvement pour montrer le côté sombre des gens. Ainsi, nous pouvons conclure que Poe moi-même a défendu par écrit au sujet de la chute de la famille Usher. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تسليط الضوء على أهم خصائص الحركة الرومانسية المظلمة، التي هي نقطة تحول في الأدب الأمريكي و ذات تأثير كبير على العديد من الأعمال الأدبية، من بينها قصة إدغار ألان بو الشهيرة، لمعرفة كيفية توظيف هذه الخصائص لتعطينا صورة عن النفس البشرية وسلوكاتها من خلال تطبيق نظرية فرويد التي تسمح بدراسة الإضطراب النفسي للشخصيات والمزاج العام للقصة. وتتكون هذه الدراسة من فصلين. الفصل الأول عن الحركة الرومانسية المظلمة ومميزاتها ونظرية التحليل النفسي لفرويد، والفصل الثاني يحتوي على الدراسة الأدبية لقصة سقوط بيت آشر بما في ذلك تطبيق لنظرية فرويد. استنادا إلى دراسة الرومانسية المظلمة في القصة، نلاحظ أن بو أظهر لنا معاناة الناس المعزولين ذوي النفسية الغير مستقرة في مجتمعه من خلال جو مظلم و الكثير من الرموز. وهكذا فإن المؤلف لديه أهداف مختلفة وراء الكتابة عن هذا النوع من الناس، وقال انه يحاول وضع كل خصائص تلك الحركة المظلمة لإظهار الجانب المظلم من الناس. وبالتالي، يمكننا أن نستنتج أن بو لديه دافع نفسي في الكتابة عن سقوط عائلة آشر .
