Abstract

This study provides a reading of Arabic ancient linguistic heritage in the light of modern linguistic approaches. The researcher has selected the "experimental approach" in this respect, The study starts with an introduction, to clarify the concept of the experimental approach, its potential and procedural steps. Then the study observe the elements can be found in the work of Abu 'Amr ibn al- 'Ala' when adopting this approach. The researcher extracts the hypothesis of his experiment, its findings, as well as its changing and persistent variables. He then concludes with the findings of the study which are: 1. The existence of the experimental principal in the linguistic work of Abu 'Amr ibn Al-'Ala'. 2. The experiment of Abu 'Amr ibn al-'Ala' contains the elements which are used in modern studies. 3. The experimenter did not use only one experimental variable to prove the hypothesis; he rather applied several variables on the tested group. 4. The study shows that observation, hypothesis and deriving conclusions are essential parts of the linguistic studies by some ancient scholars of Arabic Language. 5. The experimenter strives to remain objective in dealing with the results of the experiment and writes them down as they were found. Finally, the researcher suggests that academics should strive to adopt the experimental approach in their linguistic research, develop it and modify it to suit their particular subjects and fields in order to add some practicality to the results to their research. They should also encourage their students to follow suit, as the potential of this approach for the language is considerable.
