Muhammad Ibn al-Mustatir (d. 206 AH) proposed the view that vowels were not introduced into the Arabic language for purposes of inflection or to signify meanings but, rather, in order to separate consonants. This view opened the door wide to discussion and debate, giving rise to a variety of opinions ranging from agreement to objection. In the present study I have examined and interacted with the views of both ancient and modern scholars, though more lengthy attention is given to the views of modern scholars than those of early thinkers. This overview, which summarizes each scholar's point of view, is followed by a presentation of my own view on the issue at hand, which is indebted in particular to the views of modern scholars.en_US
