Redeeming the Image of Blacks in Langston Hughes’ Poems

Abstract

This study aims at examining the extent to which Langston Hughes’ poems are representative of the black identity and to what extent they redeem the distorted image assumed by the whites. The study analyzes three of his poems: Mother to Son, I, too and My People. The study adapts a comparative and analytical method as it analyzes the poems one by one then compares them to each other. Post Colonial terms are used in the analysis of the corpora. It is composed of three chapters. The first chapter presents an overview of the socio-historical background of the African Americans during the slavery era and post slavery era. The second one provides an overview of the literary background of the black movement. The third one is devoted to the analysis of the poems. The main objective of this study is to show how Hughes could overcome the difficulties that other black writers met in identifying themselves as black writers through depicting the black identity authentically. It also aims at showing how Hughes introduces the concept of the Beautiful Negro through suggesting that being black is not a foil for whiteness through his stylistic choices.C’ette étude vise à examiner à quel point les poèmes de Langstone Hughes représentent l’identité des Américains Noirs et à quel point il sauvent leurs image supposée par les Blanc. L’étude analyse trois parmis ses poèmes Mother to son, I too et My people, en optant pour la méthode analythique et comparative consistant à analyser les trois poèmes un par un puis à les comparer. Des thermes post coloniaux on été utilisés dans l’entreprise de cette analyse composée de trois chapitres dont le premier présente une vue d’ensemble sur l’historique socio-culturel des Afro- Américains durant et après l’époque d’esclavage, le deuxième chapitre fournit une vue générale sur la littérature afro-américaine tandis que le troisième chapitre est consacré à l’analyse des poèmes. L’objectif principal de cette étude est de démontrer comment Hughes a pu surmonter les difficultés que d’autres auteurs ont dû affronter tout-au-long de leur lute d’auto identification en tant qu’auteurs noirs à travers la description de l’authentique identité noir.
