Investigating the Use of Past Tenses in Students’ Narrative Essays: An Error Analysis Approach The case of third year Licence students of English at Kasdi Merbah University

Abstract

The present study aims at investigating the use of past tenses in the narrative essays of third year licence students of English at KMUO by conducting an error analysis. In this work, we have followed descriptive analytic approach. Both quantitative and qualitative treatment is used through a writing test for students and semi-structured interviews for teachers. The sample of this study includes thirty-one third year licence students of English and six teachers of written expression and comprehension at KMUO. The results of the present study shows that misformation error is the most common error type that third year licence students of English at KMUO made with 70.69%, and intralingual error is considered to be the first source of students’ errors since it is the most frequent source with 78.45%. Additionally, this study found that teachers of written expression and comprehension at KMUO take into consideration teaching grammar implicitly in their writing classes.La présente étude vise à étudier l'utilisation des temps passés dans les essais narratifs des étudiants en licence de troisième année d'anglais à KMUO en effectuant une analyse d'erreur. Dans ce travail, nous avons suivi une approche analytique descriptive. Le traitement quantitatif et qualitatif est utilisé à travers un test d'écriture pour les étudiants et des entretiens semi-structurés pour les enseignants. L'échantillon de cette étude comprend trente-et-un étudiants en troisième année d'anglais et six enseignants en expression écrite et compréhension à KMUO. Les résultats de la présente étude montrent que l'erreur de déformation est le type d'erreur le plus commun que les étudiants de troisième année d'anglais chez KMUO ont fait avec 70,69%, et l'erreur intralinguelle est considérée comme la première source d'erreur des étudiants. source avec 78,45%. De plus, cette étude a révélé que les enseignants d'expression écrite et de compréhension au KMUO prennent en considération l'enseignement de la grammaire implicitement dans leurs cours d'écriture. تهدف الدراسة إلى تقصي استعمال الماضي في كتابات طلبة السنة الثالثة السردية بقسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة قاصدي مرباح و ذلك بالاعتماد على مقاربة تحليل الأخطاء. تبنينا في بحثنا هذا على منهج الوصف التحليلي كما استعملنا الأدوات الكمية و النوعية من خلال توزيعنا لرائز كتابي للطلبة بالإضافة إلى قيامنا بلقاءات مع أساتذة مقياس التعبير الكتابي. و قد كانت عينتنا متكونة من 31 طالبا من السنة الثالثة ليسانس. و قد أبانت نتائج البحث أن الأخطاء في التركيب هي الشائعة و التي غالبا ما يرتكبها طلبة السنة الثالثة والتي ظهرت بنسبة 70.69% و أن .....تعتبر المصدر الأول لهذا النوع من الأخطاء حيث أبانت التحليل أن نسبتها بلغت 78.45%. و قد وجدت هذه الدراسة بالإضافة إلى هذا أن أساتذة التعبير الكتابي في جامعة قاصدي مرباح يتبنون النحو الضمني عند تدريسهم للتعبير.
