Abstract: | Since the Arab uprising, the issue of Islamic movements and political participation has been of contentious debate. This period has allowed political parties with Islamic ideology to rise into power. This paper aims to approach the reasons why do some Islamic movements decide to enter party politics, and become actively involved in the political field, while others do not?For this purpose, the article has selected two Islamic movements in Morocco: The Justice and Benevolence Movement (JBM), and the Justice and Development Party (JDP). The JBMdeliberately avoided party politics and limited its engagement to unpolitical activities, while the JDP, shifted from the religious circle to the political one, entered party politics, and won the legislative elections. The paper is based on qualitative material, and argues that the ability of Islamic movements to translate their intellectual project into a functional process i.e. representative political institutions, constitutes a factor of influence in the political scene. |
