The undertaken research focuses on the experimental study of anaerobic digestion of sludge from the Adrar city lagoon station. Digestion is carried out in batch digesters under mesophilic conditions (35 °C), in order to optimize the production of biogas. To this end, we studied : - The effect of seeding ; - The effect of the chemical pretreatment of the substrate for 24h under alkaline conditions ; - The effect of the dry matter content in the digester. To study the effect of seeding on anaerobic digestion, 2 digesters were launched with a dilution rate of 30 g DM/L : the first digester was diluted with tap water, while the second with wastewater itself. After 80 days of fermentation, the results obtained showed an increase in the production of biogas of the order of 53% when the medium is seeded as opposed to the unseeded medium. As regards the alkaline chemical pretreatment, different concentrations of NaOH were used : 1, 2.5 and 5.0% (w/w) for 24h. The digesters used are fed with dilute sludge, in order to obtain a dry matter concentration of about 30 g/L. During 60 days of digestion, and in the light of the results obtained, we noted the positive effect of pretreatment on the volume of biogas produced, indeed there is a clear increase in volume : 42.6%, when the concentration of NaOH is around 2.5%. This concentration is considered in our conditions as optimal, compared to the untreated case. Indeed, beyond this concentration, we observe an inhibition of methanogenesis and a blockage of the digestion process. In terms of the effect of the dry matter content, eight digesters were launched with concentrations of : 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40% (substrate weight / weight of water). So, during almost 4 months of digestion, the results obtained showed that there was a proportional relationship between the dry matter content and the volume of biogas produced. Indeed, we have seen an increase from 4.183 to 26.451 L, or six times more, when the MS rate goes from 5 to 35%. Beyond this dilution, the dry matter becomes clearly inhibitory of the digestion process. In view of the results obtained, we have clearly demonstrated that the seeding rate, the chemical pretreatment of the substrate and the rate of dry matter had a notorious effect on the digestion process and to guarantee a suitable and maximum production of biogas, it was necessary not to exceed certain limits, as indicated, that could be harmful to the digestive process.
