Analysis of marriage indicators in Algeria in light of the economic and political crisis 1986-2008

Abstract

Algeria is one of the countries that have undergone profound demographic changes. The marriage system has brought about major changes, especially the great impact of the political and economic crisis. Since the 1990s, Algeria has known the spread of violence and the political crisis after the events of October 1988 opened armed violence against the civilian population. Economic crisis, political crisis all led to the decline of marriage and the rise of the age at first marriage, and therefore we will focus in this study on the implications of this period and the impact on the trends of nuptiality in Algeria.

The discussion of the transmission of marriage is based on three statistical factors: the average age of marriage calculated by the Hagnal method (1953), which is the intermediate stage of marital status, the rate of definitive celibacy, and the difference in age between spouses calculated indirectly by the midian ages of marriage between men and women. Through these factors, the basic conclusion is that the average age of marriage has increased dramatically; the rate of celibacy has also increased, the difference in age between spouses is small.
