بإنهيارالإتحاد السوفييتي و سقوط جدار برلين إنتهت الحرب الباردة، لكن لا تزال أثارها في شرق آسيا و خاصة في شبه الجزيرة الكورية التي بقيت لحد اليوم مقسمة إلى دولتين في الشمال جمهورية كوريا الديمقراطية الشعبية بنظامها الدكتاتوري الاشتراكي ، و التي تسعى للحفاظ على حلفائها من المعسكر الشرقيسابقا و هم روسيا والصين ، وفي الجنوب جمهورية كوريا ذات النظام الرأسمالي الديمقراطي وهي بدورها تحافظ على حلفائها في المعسكر الغربي كالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية و اليابان ، و لا تزال ظاهرة السباق نحو التسلح في هذه المنطقة قائمة، حيث تسعى كوريا الشمالية للحفاظ على بقائها في ظل تواجد دول نووية قوية عسكريا واقتصاديا من حولها مما دفعها لتعزيز قدراتها النووية و تطوير ترسانتها العسكرية بمساعدة حلفائها التقليديين روسيا والصين و هذا من أجل إحداث التوازن الاستراتيجي في منطقة الشرق الأقصى،وقد خلق البرنامج النووي لكوريا الشمالية أحد أكبر بؤر التوتر التي تهدد الأمن العالمي ، و هذا ما إنعكس على واقع و مستقبل العلاقات في شبه الجزيرة الكورية بالإضافة إلى التداعيات الإقليمية و الدولية.
