Rendering Taboo Words into Arabic: Case study: The Green Mile

Abstract

It is no secret that "taboo word" is a term defining all what is unacceptable due to the effects it has on people's emotions; like anger, frustration and embarrassment for the sensitivity of its connotations which lead them to avoid them in any way of communications for the sake of saving their faces. Just like many psychologists and sociologists who studied such type of word, translators also had their saying in this concern since taboo is an effective part of language.The current study sheds light on the translatability of taboo words into Arabic and it seeks for the techniques used in rendering them with an aim of achieving the set adjectives and answering the questions adopting both analytical and contrastive method within which 15 examples of source text were extracted, analyzed and compared to their equivalents from the target text.

Ce n'est pas un secret pour personne que "mot tabou" est un terme qui définit tout ce qui est inacceptable en raison de ses effets sur les émotions des gens. comme la colère, la frustration et l’embarras pour la sensibilité de ses connotations, ce qui les évite de toute manière de communiquer afin de préserver leur visage. Tout comme de nombreux psychologues et sociologues qui ont étudié ce type de mots, les traducteurs ont également exprimé leurs préoccupations à cet égard, car le tabou est un élément efficace du langage. La présente étude met en lumière la traductibilité des mots tabous en arabe et cherche les techniques utilisées pour les rendre dans le but de réaliser les adjectifs définis et de répondre aux questions en adoptant des méthodes à la fois analytiques et contrastives dans lesquelles 15 exemples de texte source ont été extraits, analysés et comparés à leurs équivalents à partir du texte cible.

لا يخفى على أحد أن "اللامساس"هو لفظ يشمل كل ما يعرض عن الإتيان به نظرا لما يحمله من تأثير على مشاعر الناس كالغضب والتوتر و الانزعاج و الإحراج بسبب حساسية ما تحتويه معانيه و هذا ما يدفع بهم إلى تجنبها أثناء المحادثات في سبيل حفظ ماء الوجه. كما صبّ دارسي علم الاجتماع و علم النفس اهتمامهم بهذا النوع من اللفظ، المترجمون أيضا كان لهم حديث في هذا الخصوص نظرا لكون التابوهات اللفظية جزء مهم من اللغة. تمثلت هذه الدراسة في تسليط الضوء على قابلية نقل اللامساس من اللغة الإنجليزية إلى اللغة العربية و ذلك عبر تبني منهجية تحليلية مقارنة تم من خلالها دراسة و تحليل 15 مثالا من اللغة المصدر للأنموذج و مقارنتها بمكافئاتها من اللغة الهدف.
