Antoinette’s Identity Loss, Identity Quest in Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea.

Abstract

This study is conducted in order to investigate and analyse the theme of identity crisis that the heroine of Wide Sargasso Sea Antoinette’s suffer from due to her race, gender and social class that were representing the main reasons that led her to lose her identity and mental health. We will try also to clarify the tribulation that the Creole minority to whom the heroine ''Antoinette” belongs faced every single day, and how they have suffered from hatred and racial discrimination because of their hybridity, also; how much it was hard to be stuck between two different countries, ideologies . Furthermore, we will portray the ways in which Antoinette was triply oppressed by being both women, hybrid and colonized, and how these different oppressing forces contributed in the loss and the madness that she faces.

Cette étude est menée afin d'étudier et d'analyser le thème de la crise d'identité dont souffre l'héroïne de Wide Sargasso Sea Antoinette a cause de sa race, de son sexe et de sa classe sociale qui représentent les raisons fandamentales et qui l'on amenée à perdre son identité et sa santé mentale. Dans cette étude, les chercheurs essaierons également de clarifier la tribulation de la minorité créole à laquelle "Antoinette" appartient, et comment elle a souffert de la haine et de la discrimination raciale à cause de sa hybridité, aussi, ainsi que expliquer comment il était difficile d'être coincé entre deux pays différents, deux idéologies . En outre, nous présenterons les façons dont Antoinette a été triplement opprimée en étant à la fois d'etre une femme, hybride et colonisée, et comment ces différentes forces d'oppression ont contribué à la perte et à la folie que Antoinette avait vécue
