The northern Algerian Sahara oases, which is the cradle of the phoenicultural heritage, face many environmental constraints because of natural and human reasons. These constrains can lead to dysfunction and a decrease in agronomic potential, especially in the ancestral palm groves of the Ouargla basin. The present study aims to establish a spatio-temporal diagnosis of hydro-edaphic environmental conditions in two stages: first at the of the ksar palm grove and second in selective palm grove gardens. The initial goal is to assess the seasonal effect of the water conditions of the irrigation-drainage as well as the water table on the hydro-saline dynamics of the soils and then to estimate the impact of the traditional management of irrigation on the salinization of soils in palm grove gardens. The study showed that the phreatic levels are high both in summer and in winter with an average depth equal to 83.08 ± 29.99 cm while unsignificant generalized drawdown is registered in summer at the palm groves and a rise in phreatic water at the same time in certain areas of depressions. The seasonal variation in the salinity of phreatic water remains insignificant (“extremely salty” class) in all seasons, ranges between 7.82 and 90.87 dS.cm-1. The average depth of the gypsum crusts is shallow in the order of 113 ± 29.5 cm. This superficial situation of groundwater table and the mechanical obstacle of the crust significantly favors the hydro-halomorphy of soils where the average seasonal salinity decreases from 4.05 ± 2.46 dS.cm-1 in winter to 2.59 ± 1.36 dS.cm-1 in summer. The observed decrease seems to be related to that of the capillary rise in summer, following the drawdown of phreatic water, and to the increase in the leaching of salts by irrigation. At the same time, the heterogeneous traditional management of irrigation and the absence of drainage in the palm grove gardens contribute to the desalination of soils in certain situations by leaching. The latter decreases with the rise of groundwater, due to the accumulation of salts by the increase in capillary rise. This space-time observation demonstrates a hydro-edaphic dysfunction across the oasis of Ksar and its gardens. It shows hydro-halomorphic degradation of soils due to irrational management of irrigation-drainage. Thus, proper planning is essential to limit degradation and allows the sustainability of the oasis system.
