Through this article, we will seek to understand the institution of the Caliphate in Nafza and the techniques for shaping the social and political position of the Caliph between the years 1881 (the date of the entry of French colonialism into the Tunisian country) and 1926 (the date of the dismissal of the Caliph Hajj Ali bin Mokhtar), and their relationship to the changing internal and external contexts. France's lack of confidence in the people and their notables, and France's need to rationalize the administration, establish clear criteria for the nomination of state agents away from family fanaticism, the throne or social prestige. France's bet on the production of state agents fully loyal to it, appointing them in places where they lack the family bond and the material and real estate revolution, first to reduce corruption, and secondly, to keep the appointed caliph at the mercy of France, for it is his only support in an environment alien to him. Therefore, the French authority bet on the installation of a caliph with contractual and functional dimensions instead of a caliph with sympathetic support (the nervousness of the womb, kinship and the throne).
