The aim of this study was to identify the level of reading comprehension within a sample of fourth grade pupils. The sample consisted of (110) male and female pupils chosen using the random sampling technique from the primary schools of Ain Maabed, Djelfa. In order to attend to the study objectives, a reading comprehension test was used after having conducted a pilot study on 30 pupils so as to judge the validity and reliability of the instrument. The study carried out on the main sample revealed that the level of reading comprehension among most pupils in the sample was below average. The study also revealed that the females scored better than the males with regard the reading comprehension means. The differences in the level of reading comprehension are attributed to the educational level of mothers while there was no statistically significant correlation between the level of reading comprehension and the educational level of fathers.en_US
