To do this, we conducted surveys of 187 camel riders in two large areas (Ouargla and Touggourt), combined with field trips. Through the results obtained, we have identified and geo-referenced 86 courses including 62 courses frequented by the camel cameleers of the Ouargla area and 24 by the camel cameleers of Touggourt; in addition to 91 pastoral wells located near the routes at a distance of between 3 and 12 km. The mobility of herds has changed over time, taking two main forms: transhumance over distances ranging from a few kilometres to several hundred kilometres, and nomadism. To this end, the majority of the cameleers surveyed, 96.3%, can be qualified as transhumants, while there maining 3.7% of cameleers are qualified as nomads. In addition, 62% of the cameleers surveyed prefer the semi-guarded system and 38% practice the guarded system |
