Sanity and Insanity in Joseph Heller's Catch-22

Abstract

Catch 22 is a satirical war novel by the American author JOSEPH HELLER .He started writing it in1953; and the novel was first published in 1961. Frequently it is known as one of the Greatest books during the twentieth Century. It revolves around the protagonist Captain John Yossarian who is anti –heroic character .Yossarian considers the war as a personal attack and his mind realize that the military is attempting to send him to death .He therefore try more inventive ideas to escape from his missions. The "catch" in Catch 22 is curious ARMY AIR FORCES rules which confirm that soldiers is considered insane if he wants to fly risky missions but if he makes the necessary formal request to be relieved of such missions, the act of making request confirmed that he is sane .Yossarian tends to behave in ways that put him in psychology situation make him suffer and his mind under contradictory obligations. The interpretation of the psychological case of Yossarian led him to self-selfishness it signs that the main objectif is to stay alive even if he considered as a coward soldier. This analysis of self-defense mechanisms has its meaning in Freudian psychoanalytical approach and this is what the study aim to. After conducting the analysis and discussing the findings, this study validates the suggested hypotheses: that YOSSARIAN is indeed anti- heroic character, and those defense mechanisms are components of repression in YOUSSARIAN'S case, that operate at the level of the unconscious this is mean that the deep structure of repression and defense mechanisms is the apparent state can be observed through a set of symptoms.

Catch 22 est un roman de guerre satirique de l'auteur américain JOSEPH HELLER qui a commencé à l'écrire en 1953 et qui a été publié pour la première fois en 1961. Il est souvent considéré comme l'un des plus grands livres du vingtième siècle et son protagoniste, le CAPITAINE JOHN YOSSARIAN, est un personnage anti-héroïque. Yossarian considère la guerre comme une attaque personnelle et son esprit se rend compte que l'armée cherche à l'envoyer à la mort. Il essaie donc de trouver des idées plus inventives pour échapper à ses missions. Le "piège" dans Catch 22 est le curieux règlement des FORCES AÉRIENNES DE L'ARMÉE qui confirme que le soldat est considéré comme fou s'il veut effectuer des missions risquées, mais s'il fait la demande formelle nécessaire pour être relevé de ces missions, l'acte de faire la demande confirme qu'il est sain d'esprit. YOSSARIAN a tendance à se comporter d'une manière qui le met dans une situation psychologique qui le fait souffrir et qui soumet son esprit à des obligations contradictoires. L'interprétation du cas psychologique de YOSSARIAN l'a conduit à l'égoïsme, il signe que l'objectif principal est de rester en vie même s'il est considéré comme un lâche solitaire. Cette analyse des mécanismes d'autodéfense a sa signification dans l'approche psychanalytique freudienne et c'est ce que l'étude vise. Après avoir mené l'analyse et discuté les résultats, cette étude valide les hypothèses suggérées : que YOSSARIAN est effectivement un personnage anti-héroïque, et que les mécanismes de défense sont des composantes du refoulement dans le cas de YOUSSARIAN, qui opèrent au niveau de l'inconscient ; cela signifie que la structure profonde du refoulement et des mécanismes de défense est l'état apparent qui peut être observé à travers un ensemble de symptômes.

تعتبر رواية "الصيد 22" للمؤلف الأمريكي جوزيف هيلر من الروايات الحربية الساخرة، و الذي بدأ بكتابتها في بدايات العام 1953، وتم نشرها لاحقا في العام 1961. لطالما أعتبرت الرواية من افضل الاعمال خلال القرن العشرين، حيث تتمحور أحداثها حول بطل القصة "الكابتن جون يوساريان" الذي يعتبر شخصا يفتقر لمميزات البطل في اي رواية عادية، واعتبر يوساريان الحرب كهجوم شخصي بتفكيره المتمحور حول ان الجيش يحاول ليلقى حتفه لا غير، ورغم ذلك حاول مرات عدة ان التفكير في الهرب من مهماته بطريقة مبدعة. معنى "الصيد" في رواية "الصيد 22" هو قواعد غريبة للقوات الجوية للجيش و التي تؤكد ان الجندي يعتبر مجنونا إذا كان يريد الإنضمام لمهمات الطيران المحفوف بالخطر، لكن إذا قدم الطلب الرسمي اللازم لإعفائه من مثل هذه المهمات، فإن طلب تقديم الطلب يؤكد أنه بكامل قواه العقلية. يميل يوسارين للتصرف بالطريقة التي من شأنها أن تجعله في وضع المختل عقليا و التي تجعل عقله يعاني من الإلتزامات المتناقضة. أدى تفسير الحالة النفسية ليوساريان إلى اكتسابه أنانية الذات، فهذا دليل على أن الهدف الرئيسي هو البقاء على قيد الحياة حتى لو اعتبر جندياً جباناُ، حيث ان تحليل آليات الدفاع النفس لها معنى في منهج التحليل النفسي لفرويد وهذا هو هدف الدراسة. بعد التحليل و مناقشة النتائج و النظر فيها، تؤكد هذه الدراسة صحة الفرضيات المقترحة، و هي أن يوساريان هو بالفعل شخصية خالية من خصائص البطل، وأن آليات الدفاع هذه هي مكونات من الردع في حالة يوساريان، والتي تنشط على مستوى اللاوعي وهذا يعني أن البنية العميقة لآليات الردع و الدفاع هي الحالة الواضحة التي يمكن ملاحظتها من خلال مجموعة من الأعراض.
