The Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Language Usage: Investigating the Coinage of Coroneologisms in English and Overcoming the Difficulties/Challenges of Translating them into Arabic

Abstract

No one can deny the recent dominance of the English language on social media. This "flexible" language, so to speak, is evolving more than ever that new words are constantly added to dictionaries. It is a no-brainer to predict that the COVID-19 neologisms received the largest part of the new entries as the pandemic is an ongoing phenomenon. Neologisms, at first sight, evoke bewilderment and weirdness. Once they are broken down into their components, they would evoke laughter and admiration. This study introduces an analysis of a collection of English neologisms related to the COVID19 pandemic in the interest of paving the way to translate them into Arabic. This study is divided into three main chapters: the first and second chapters are theoretical, while the third chapter is practical. In chapter one, we shed light on the background of the COVID19 pandemic, with special reference to its impacts on the English language. In chapter two, we highlight the word formation processes in English and Arabic and the difficulties/challenges of translating English neologisms into Arabic. In chapter three, we introduce the corpus of the study which includes a collection of 20 English neologisms related to the COVID19 pandemic. Then, we analyze these neologisms so to spot the difficulties/challenges of translating them into Arabic. By then, we adopt appropriate methods to overcome these difficulties/challenges in view to produce Arabic equivalents/counterparts for these neologisms.

Nul ne peut nier la domination de la langue anglaise sur les réseaux sociaux ces derniers temps. Cette langue " flexible ", pour ainsi dire, connait une évolution sans commune mesure, par l’ajout continu de nouveaux mots à son lexique et dont une grande partie est constituée de mots émergeants de la pandémie du COVID-19 que le monde subi toujours. Ces néologismes, peuvent au premier abord, provoquer un sentiment d’étrangeté et de perplexité, mais une fois décomposés, ils provoquent le rire et forcent l'admiration. Cette étude analyse un nombre de néologismes anglais liés à la pandémie du COVID-19 dans le but de préparer le terrain à leur traduction en arabe. Pour ce faire, nous avons divisée notre travail en trois chapitres : les deux premiers sont théoriques, tandis que le troisième est pratique. Dans le premier chapitre, nous mettons en évidence la pandémie du COVID-19 et son impact sur l’anglais. Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous nous arrêtons aux mécanismes de création des mots en anglais et en arabe ainsi que les difficultés et les défis de leur traduction vers l’arabe. Quant au troisième chapitre, nous l’entamons par la présentation du corpus de l’étude, comprenant vingt néologismes anglais liés à la COVID-19, suivis de leur analyse afin de repérer les difficultés et d’autres défis de leur traduction vers l’arabe. Cette analyse vise à identifier des méthodes adéquates pour surmonter ces difficultés et ces défis en vue de produire des équivalents et correspondants arabes aux néologismes anglais.

لا يَختَلِفُ اثنان بِشَأْنِ هَيمَنَةِ اللُّغَة الإنـكــلِـيـزِيَّـة مُؤَخَّرًا عَلَى مَوَاقِعِ التَّواصلِ الاجتِماعِي. هَذِهِ اللُّغَةُ المِطواعَة –إنْ صَحَّ التَّعبِير– تَتَطَوَّر بِشَكلٍ غَيرِ مَسبُوقٍ يُفضِي إلَى إضَافَةِ كَلِمَاتٍ جَدِيدَة إلى قَامُوسِها عَلَى نَحوٍ مُتَواصِل. وَلَا يَخفَى عَلَى المُطَّلِع أنَّ جَائِحَةَ كورونا استَأثَرَت بِالنَّصِيبِ الأكبَر مِن هَذهِ الكَلِمَاتِ بِحكمِ أنَّها ظَاهِرَة مُعاشَة إلَى يَومِ النَّاسِ هَذَا. وَتُثِير هَذِهِ الكَلِمَاتُ المُستَحدَثَة لِلوَهلَةِ الأُولَى الشَّدَهَ وَالعَجَبَ، وَمَا إنْ تُفَكِّكَهَا لِتَستَرجِعَ مُكَوِّنَـاتِها الأَصلِيَّة إلَّا وَغَمَرَكَ الضَّحِكُ وَالطَّرَب. تَستَعرِضُ دِرَاسَتُنا هَذِهِ تَحلِيلًا لِمَجمُوعَةٍ مِنَ الكَلِمَاتِ المُستَحدَثَة في اللُّغَة الإنـكــلِـيـزِيَّـة وَالمُتَعَلِّقَة بِجَائِحَة كورونا؛ بِغَرَضِ تَمهِيدِ السَّبِيلِ لِـتَرجَمَتِها إلَى اللُّغَة العَرَبِيَّة. وَإنَّنَا نَعرِضُ دِرَاسَتَنَا هَذِهِ في ثَلاثَةِ فُصولٍ، حَيثُ يَستَعرضُ الفَصلَان الأَوَّلُ وَالثَّاني الخَلفِيَّةَ النَّظَرِيَّةَ لِلمَوضوعِ، وَنُقَدِّمُ في الفَصلِ الثَّالِثِ الجَانِبَ التَّطبِيقي. فِي الفَصلِ الأَوَّلِ نَتَطَرَّقُ إلَى مَعلُومَاتٍ عَامَّةٍ بِشَأنِ جَائِحَةِ كورونا مَعَ إيلَاءِ أهَمِيَّةٍ أكبَر لِتَأثِيرِها عَلَى اللُّغَة الإنـكــلِـيـزِيَّـة. وَفِي الفَصلِ الثَّانِي نَذكُر آلِيَّاتِ تَولِيدِ الكَلِمَاتِ وَاستِحدَاثِها فِي لُغَة شكسبير وَلُغَة الضَّاد، وَنُحَدِّد صُعوبَاتِ تَرجَمَةِ الكَلِمَاتِ المُستَحدَثَة إلَى اللُّغَة العَرَبِيَّة وَكَذَا تَحَدِّيَاتِها. أمَّا فِي الفَصلِ الثَّالِثِ فَنُعَرِّفُ بِمَجَالِ دِرَاسَتِنَا وإطارِهَا المُتَمَثِّلَانِ فِي عِشرِبنَ كَلِمَةٍ اُستُحدِثَت في اللُّغَة الإنـكــلِـيـزِيَّـة خِلالَ جَائِحَةِ كورونا، ثُمَّ نُقَدِّمُ تَحلِيلًا لَهَا؛ بِغَرَضِ تَحدِيدِ صُعوبَاتِ تَرجَمَتِها إلى اللُّغَةِ العَرَبِيَّةِ وَتَحَدِّيَاتِها، وَهَذَا مَا سَاعَدَنَا فِي انتِقَاءِ الطَّرَائِقِ المُنَاسِبَةِ لِتَذلِيلِ صُعوبَاتِ التَّرجَمَة وَتَجَاوُزِ تَحَدِّيَاتِها؛ مِن أجلِ إنتَاجِ مُكَافِئَاتٍ أو مُقَابِلَاتٍ في اللُّغَة العَرَبِيَّة لِهَذِهِ الكَلِمَاتِ المُستَحدَثَة.
