Problems in Dissertation Writing ( The Case of 2nd Year Master Students at the Department of English, KMUO)

Abstract

The present study aims at investigating the kinds of difficulties that second-year Master ESP and Applied Linguistics students face when writing a dissertation. Writing a dissertation is a difficult process that requires considerable effort and practice on the learners’ part to reach an acceptable degree of academic writing. For this purpose, the different characteristics, techniques and strategies of writing a dissertation are in-depth searched and described. Through a questionnaire administered to thirty-one (31) second year MasterESP and Applied Linguistics students from the Department of Foreign Languages, English section, at KasdiMerbahUniversity_Ouargla, we intend to investigate the problems these students encounter when writing a dissertation. The findings gathered in this study yielded some useful insights about these problems which hinder effective production and which result from lack of knowledge about the academic writing characteristics, techniques and strategies. Finally, this dissertation aims at suggesting some strategies which written expression teachers can have recourse to in their classes in order to help and pave the way for their learners for the sake of an effective academic writing, to motivate their writing abilities and especially to remove their trepidation of how to write a dissertation.

Cette étude vise à identifier les types de difficultés rencontrées par les étudiants de deuxième année de master en spécialité anglais spécialisé et linguistique appliquée lors de la rédaction d'un mémoire. approfondie à travers un questionnaire adressé à trente et un (31) étudiants en deuxième année d'un Master d'Anglais à Objectifs Spécifiques et de Linguistique Appliquée du Département des Langues Etrangères, spécialité Anglais à l'Université de KasdiMerbah Ouargla. pour rechercher les problèmes auxquels ces étudiants sont confrontés lors de l'édition du mémo, et les résultats de cette étude ont révélé quelques idées qui peuvent être utiles pour identifier les problèmes qui entravent une production efficace et résultant du manque d'informations sur les caractéristiques et les stratégies de l'écriture académique L'expression écrite pendant l'enseignement, qui aidera les apprenants à atteindre le niveau d'écriture académique efficace, sans oublier de stimuler leurs capacités d'écriture, en les aidant notamment à améliorer leurs compétences en écriture académique.

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على أنواع الصعوبات التي تواجه طلبة السنة ثانية ماسترتخصص إنجليزية لأغراض خاصة ولسانيات تطبيقية عند قيامهم بكتابة مذكرة، و تعتبر كتابة المذكرة عملية صعبة تقتضي من المتعلمين بذل الكثير من الجهد إلى جانب الممارسة للوصول إلى مستوى مقبول من الكتابة الأكاديمية، ولهذا الغرض تم التعمق في البحث والوصف لمختلف مزايا الكتابة الأكاديمية وأساليبها واستراتيجياتها من خلال استبيان موجه إلى واحد وثلاثين (31) طالبا في السنة الثانية ماستر تخصص إنجليزية لأغراض خاصة ولسانيات تطبيقية لقسم اللغات الأجنبية تخصص اللغة الانجليزية بجامعة قاصدي مرباح ورقلة، وقد كان هدفنا هو البحث عن المشاكل التي تواجه هؤلاء الطلبة أثناء تحرير المذكرة، و كشفت نتائج هذه الدراسة عن بعض الأفكار التي قد تفيد في تحديد المشاكل التي تعيق الإنتاج الفعال والناتجة عن نقص المعلومات حول خصائص الكتابة الأكاديمية واستراتيجياتها تهدف أيضا هذه الدراسة إلى اقتراح بعض الاستراتيجيات التي يمكن أن يتبعها أساتذة مقياس التعبير الكتابي أثناء التدريس والتي من ِشأنها مساعدة المتعلمين للوصول إلى مستوى كتابة أكاديمية فعالة ناهيك عن تحفيز قدراتهم في الكتابة وخصوصا مساعدتهم على ترقية مهارات الكتابةالأكاديمية.
