Between the centripetal construction of meaning and the suggestion of individual’s model of conduct: An annotated translation of Beyala’s Your Name Shall Be Tanga from English into Arabic

Abstract

This study investigates the translatability of the novel Your Name Shall Be Tanga. It is rather a focus on the process of translating works of literature with controversial themes and taboos while maintaining the integrity of the original work and while targeting a global audience. The impact of the translator's ideolo-gy on the translation process and its implications on the book's main essence de-serves being dealt with through the analysis of the African novel that touches on sensitive subjects. This is, no doubt, why the selected passages from the novel are translated and examined qualitatively and by making use of corpus-based method. The chosen passages deal with particular themes such as relationships, gender roles, societal norms, power dynamics, religion, and culture. The results highlight the necessity for an inclusive approach that recognizes the translator's distinctive perspective while embracing the universality of the human experience. They also reveal the intricate connection between the translator's ideology and the preservation of the book's essence.

Cette étude examine la traduisibilité du roman Your Name Shall Be Tanga. Il s'agit plutôt de mettre l'accent sur le processus de traduction d'œuvres littéraires aux thèmes controversés et aux tabous tout en préservant l'intégrité de l'œuvre originale et en ciblant un public mondial. L'impact de l'idéologie du traducteur sur le processus de traduction et ses implications sur l'essence principale du livre mérite d'être traité à travers l'analyse du roman africain qui touche à des sujets sensibles. C'est sans doute la raison pour laquelle les passages sélectionnés du roman sont traduits et examinés qualitativement et en utilisant la méthode basée sur le corpus. Les passages choisis traitent de thèmes particuliers tels que les relations, les rôles de genre, les normes sociétales, la dynamique du pouvoir, la religion et la culture. Les résultats soulignent la nécessité d'une approche inclusive qui reconnaît la perspective distinctive du traducteur tout en embrassant l'universalité de l'expérience humaine. Ils révèlent également le lien complexe entre l'idéologie du traducteur et la préservation de l'essence du livre.
