Subtitling Selected Episodes of Crash Course "Public Health"

Abstract

In this work, we attempt to subtitle selected episodes from the YouTube playlist “Crash Course: Public Health” from English into Arabic. The video series calls for spreading awareness on public health matters in a digestible infographic format, and in this study, we aim to explain the subtitling process to understand the difficulties audio-visual translators face and provide suggestions to said difficulties. The work is divided into three chapters. An introductory brief chapter covering the basic information about this research which encompasses a literature review, methodology and significance of this research. A second chapter titled “theoretical framework” that aims to describe and explain audio-visual translation and give a complete presentation to the subtitling process. We also provide a set of definitions of translation from the perspective of three famous scholars (Eugene Nida, John Catford and Peter Newmark) to discuss the phenomenon of reduction, shifts and the issue of untranslatability. In the last chapter, we proceed with the actual subtitling process where we begin by defining the methodology adopted, the basis of sample selection, tools used and finally the actual analysis and conclusions.

Dans ce projet, nous essayons de sous-titrer des épisodes sélectionnés de la liste de lecture YouTube "Crash Course Public Health" de l'anglais vers l'arabe. La série de vidéos destinée à la sensibilisation aux questions de santé publique dans un format infographique facile à assimiler. Dans cette étude, nous essayons d'expliquer le processus de sous-titrage pour montrer les problèmes auxquels sont confrontés les traducteurs audiovisuels et proposer des solutions à ces problèmes. Le travail est divisé en trois chapitres ; un bref chapitre d'introduction couvrant les informations de base sur cette recherche comprenant une revue de la littérature, la méthodologie et l'importance de cette recherche. Un deuxième chapitre intitulé “Cadre Théorique” qui vise à décrire et expliquer la traduction audiovisuelle et à donner une présentation complète du processus de sous-titrage. Nous proposons également un ensemble de définitions de la traduction du point de vue des trois savants célèbres (Eugene Nida, John Catford et Peter Newmark), afin de discuter le phénomène de la réduction, les déplacements de Catford et du problème de l'intraductibilité. Dans le dernier chapitre, nous procédons à la mise en œuvre du processus de sous-titrage proprement dit, d’où nous commençons par définir la méthodologie adoptée, la base de sélection des échantillons, les outils utilisés et enfin l'analyse et les conclusions (résultats) proprement dites.

نسعى في هذا العمل لترجمة حلقات مختارة من سلسلة الصحة العامة (Public Health) لقناة كراش كورس (Crash Course) على يوتيوب من الإنجليزية إلى العربية. تهدف سلسلة الفيديوهات هاته إلى نشر الوعي بخصوص الصحة العامة بطريقة مبسّطة ورسومية سهلة الفهم. وفي هذه الدراسة، نحاول شرح عملية السترجة لفهم المشكلات التي يواجهها المترجمون في العمل على المحتويات السمعية البصرية وكذا اقتراح حلول لتلك المشاكل. العمل مقسّم إلى ثلاثة فصولأساسية. فصل تمهيدي موجز يغطي المعلومات الأساسية حول هذا البحث من خلال احتواء مراجعة للأعمال السابقة والمنهجية المتّبعة والأهمية المرجوة من البحث. وفصل ثانٍ بعنوان "الإطار النظري" يهدف إلى وصف وشرح الترجمة السمعية البصرية وتقديم عرض شامل لعملية السترجة. نتطرق أيضا في نفس الفصل إلى مجموعة من تعريفات الترجمة من وجهة نظر ثلاثة علماء مشهورين (يوجين نايدا وجون كاتفورد وبيتر نيومارك) لمناقشة ظاهرة الاختـزال والتحويـلات ومسألة عدم قابلية الترجمة. في الفصل الأخير، نشرع في عملية الترجمة الفعلية حيث نبدأ بتحديد المنهجية المعتمدة وأساس اختيار العينات والأدوات المستخدمة وأخيرا التحليل الفعلي للبيانات واستنباط الاستنتاجات.
