The present work aims to make a comparative study between the seed coats of Plantago ciliata Desf. and psyllium from the market, in view of discovering a new source of psyllium. P. ciliata is a spontaneous plant with a medicinal character, harvested in the region of Ghardaïa, northern eastern Algerian Sahara. The seed coats of P. ciliata contain 1.95 ± 0.16% humidity, 6.5 ± 0.22% ash, 88.37 ± 1.28% total oses, among them 82.14 ± 13% neutral oses 6.12 ± 0.82% acid oses, 0.98 ±0.15% protein, 0.37±0.01% lipids, and % polyphenols. The analysis of mineral elements indicates 1805ppm of Sodium, 4379ppm of Potassium, 3168ppm of calcium, 477.7ppm of magnesium, 0.2731ppm of iron. Analysis of the monosaccharide composition by HPLC after hydrolysis by TFA at 2 M for 1 hour and 30 min at 120°C shows the presence of an arabinoxylan, with an Ara/Xyl ratio of 0.63. The results of this work confirm the immense resemblance between the seed coats of P. ciliata harvested in the Ghardaïa region and that of psyllium imported from India. This gives an opportunity to produce 100% Algerian organic Psyllium.
