This study investigates the nitration of selected aromatic compounds—benzoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and vanillin—using two different nitration systems: the traditional H₂SO₄/HNO₃ mixture and the alternative Ca(NO₃)₂/CH₃COOH system. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of each method in terms of selectivity, yield, and environmental impact. The reactions were carried out under controlled conditions, and the resulting compounds were characterized using infrared (IR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy, in addition to melting point measurements and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis to confirm product structures and nitration positions. The results showed that the traditional H₂SO₄/HNO₃ system generally provided higher yields, such as with phenol (70.24%) and salicylic acid (71.6%), except for benzoic acid, which gave a higher yield with Ca (NO₃)₂/CH₃COOH (80.8%). In contrast, the nitration of phenol using the alternative reagent showed a relatively low yield (32.8%). These findings indicate that the efficiency of the nitration process strongly depends on the nature of the substituent on the aromatic ring and highlight the importance of adopting greener strategies in chemistry without significantly compromising chemical performanceen_US
