Negotiating the Self between Jewish Religiosity and The Gentile Allure In Saul Bellow’s “A SilverDish”

Abstract

This study his study investigates the negotiation of identity in Saul Bellow’s short story “A Silver Dish” (1978), situated within a historical context marked by assimilationist pressures on American Jews following the Johnson-Reed Act. Despite extensive scholarly attention to Bellow’s major novels, this short story remains comparatively underexplored. Existing criticism has largely emphasized alienation while overlooking the psychological and symbolic dynamics of identity formation. Drawing on Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial framework, particularly the concepts of hybridity, mimicry, and the third space, this study employs close textual analysis to examine the interplay between Woody Selbst’s inner psyche and his external social environment. It argues that Woody’s identity emerges through a continuous negotiation between inherited Jewish religiosity and the secular, individualist worldview associated with his paternal influence. Rather than resolving this tension, Woody internalizes its contradictions, producing a fragmented yet productive space of subjectivity in which identity remains unstable and continuously reconfigured. The analysis demonstrates that Woody’s memories, ethical ambivalence, and emotional conflicts reflect not a binary opposition but a dynamic process of identity formation shaped by intergenerational inheritance and cultural dissonance. Within this interpretive frame, the silver dish functions as a secondary symbolic marker of inherited obligation and moral displacement, reinforcing rather than structuring the narrative’s central concern. Ultimately, the study contends that Bhabha’s theoretical model provides a productive lens for reinterpreting American Jewish identity in Bellow’s fiction, revealing identity as an ongoing process of negotiation within intersecting cultural, psychological, and ideological forces.

Cette étude examine la négociation de l’identité dans la nouvelle « A Silver Dish » (1978) de Saul Bellow, inscrite dans un contexte historique marqué par des pressions assimilationnistes exercées sur les Juifs américains à la suite du Johnson-Reed Acta. Bien que les romans majeurs de Bellow aient fait l’objet d’une attention critique importante, cette nouvelle demeure relativement peu étudiée. La critique existante met souvent l’accent sur l’aliénation sans analyser en profondeur les dynamiques psychologiques et symboliques de la formation identitaire. S’appuyant sur le cadre théorique postcolonial de Homi K. Bhabha, notamment l’hybridité, la mimicry et le third space .cette étude propose une analyse textuelle rapprochée du rapport entre la psyché intérieure de Woody Selbst et son environnement social. Elle soutient que son identité se construit à travers une négociation continue entre la religiosité juive héritée et la vision du monde sécularisée associée à la figure paternelle. Loin de résoudre cette tension, Woody en internalise les contradictions, produisant ainsi un espace subjectif fragmenté où l’identité demeure instable. L’analyse montre que la mémoire, l’ambivalence éthique et les conflits émotionnels de Woody relèvent d’un processus dynamique de formation identitaire plutôt que d’une opposition binaire. Dans ce cadre, le plateau en argent constitue un marqueur symbolique secondaire de l’héritage et du déplacement moral.
