Edna Pontellier as an Embodiment of Early Feminist Consciousness in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening

Abstract

This dissertation examines Kate Chopin’s The Awakening (1899) as an early articulation of feminist consciousness, focusing on Edna Pontellier’s struggle against the patriarchal structures of nineteenth-century Creole society. Applying a feminist literary framework and text-centered close reading, the study analyzes Edna’s psychological and social transition from a conventional "mother-woman" within the "Cult of True Womanhood" to an individual seeking bodily and spatial autonomy. The research investigates specific literary symbols—namely the sea, birds, clothing, and domestic spaces—as narrative mechanisms that map Edna’s trajectory of self-assertion and her subsequent social alienation. Furthermore, the study evaluates the structural limitations and internal conflicts that hinder her existence as an independent subject within the Victorian social order. Ultimately, the dissertation argues that Edna’s suicide in the Gulf can be interpreted as a paradoxical existential choice; it functions both as the tragic fallout of insurmountable structural constraints and as an assertion of personal agency against patriarchal assimilation. Ce mémoire examine The Awakening (1899) de Kate Chopin en tant qu'articulation précoce de la conscience féministe, en se concentrant sur la lutte d'Edna Pontellier contre les structures patriarcales de la société créole du XIXe siècle. En appliquant un cadre littéraire féministe et une lecture textuelle minutieuse (close reading), l'étude analyse la transition psychologique et sociale d'Edna, passant d'une « mère-femme » conventionnelle au sein du « Culte de la vraie féminité », à un individu en quête d'autonomie corporelle et spatiale. La recherche étudie des symboles littéraires spécifiques à savoir la mer, les oiseaux, les vêtements et les espaces domestiques comme des mécanismes narratifs qui retracent la trajectoire d'affirmation de soi d'Edna et son aliénation sociale ultérieure. De plus, l'étude évalue les limites structurelles et les conflits internes qui entravent son existence en tant que sujet indépendant au sein de l'ordre social victorien. En fin de compte, le mémoire soutient que le suicide d'Edna dans le Golfe peut être interprété comme un choix existentiel paradoxal; il fonctionne à la fois comme la retombée tragique de contraintes structurelles insurmontables et comme une affirmation de son agentivité personnelle contre l'assimilation patriarcale.

تتناول هذه المذكرة رواية الصحوة لكيت شوبان (1899) بوصفها تعبيراً مبكراً عن الوعي النسوي، مع التركيز على صراع البطلة إدنا بونتلييه ضد البنى الأبوية في المجتمع الكريولي خلال القرن التاسع عشر. بتطبيق إطار النقد الأدبي النسوي والقراءة الفاحصة للنص، تحلل الدراسة الانتقال النفسي والاجتماعي لإدنا من دور "الأم/المرأة" التقليدية المحصورة في "عبادة الأنوثة الحقيقية"، إلى فرد يسعى نحو الاستقلال الجسدي والمكاني. كما تبحث الدراسة في رموز أدبية محددة تحديداً البحر، الطيور، الملابس، والمساحات المنزلية كآليات سردية ترسم مسار إدنا نحو إثبات الذات وما تلاه من اغتراب اجتماعي. علاوة على ذلك، تقيّم الدراسة القيود البنيوية والصراعات الداخلية التي تعيق وجودها كذات مستقلة داخل النظام الفيكتوري الصارم. وفي النهاية، تجادل المذكرة بأن انتحار إدنا في الخليج يمكن تفسيره كخيار وجودي مفارق؛ إذ يتجلى كنتيجة مأساوية لقيود هيكلية لا يمكن تجاوزها، وفي الوقت ذاته، كتأكيد على فاعليتها الفردية ضد الاستيعاب الأبوي.
