For accurate characterization of petroleum reservoirs and the optimization of drilling and production operations, a comprehensive understanding of the geomechanical properties of rock formations is required, particularly Poisson’s ratio and Young’s modulus, due to their fundamental role in wellbore stability assessment, in-situ stress estimation, drilling performance optimization, and hydraulic fracturing design. However, the estimation of these properties has traditionally relied on direct laboratory measurements on core samples or on sonic and density well logs. These methods are often unavailable or of limited accuracy in tight and naturally fractured reservoirs, owing to poor core recovery, data loss, and the degradation of log quality resulting from complex drilling conditions and the influence of drilling mud. This thesis aims to develop intelligent machine learning-based frameworks for the continuous and real-time prediction of geomechanical properties, specifically dynamic Poisson’s ratio (DPR) and dynamic Young’s modulus (DE), using drilling data and geophysical well log data. The developed models were trained and validated using 247 data points for DPR prediction and 1894 data points for DE prediction. The tight and naturally fractured El Hamra Quartzite Formation, of Rhourde Nouss field in southeastern Algeria, was selected as a case study for this research. The main findings of this thesis can be summarized as follows: • Dynamic Poisson’s ratio prediction is highly accurate using real-time drilling data, with Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) achieving (R² ≈ 0.856, RMSE0.025, MAE0.019). • Dynamic Young’s modulus prediction reaches optimal performance with XGB applied to conventional well logs (R² ≈ 0.963, RMSE ≈ 2.281, MAE ≈ 1.355), particularly after reservoir classification based on borehole diameter CALIPER • The innovative CALIPER (borehole diameter)-based reservoir classification strategy improved model accuracy by reducing internal data variability (R² ≈ 0.963, RMSE ≈ 2.281, MAE ≈ 1.355). • Using real-time drilling data represents a technical and economic alternative to traditional methods, enhancing decision making and reducing field operation costs. The results of this thesis confirm the effectiveness of artificial intelligence techniques in achieving accurate geomechanical characterization of complex petroleum reservoirs, including tight and fractured reservoirs, while saving time and effort and reducing costs associated with laboratory testing and conventional logging operations notably when losing of travel time (∆t). Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of integrating operational data with intelligent models as a modern and promising approach for developing more efficient and reliable reservoir evaluation strategies in contemporary petroleum engineering.en_US
