Abstract

Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye (1970) examines the intersection of gender and racial identity among marginalized twentieth-century African American women. It illustrates how Eurocentric beauty standards distort their lives within a society ruled by systemic racism and patriarchy. This research analyzes the psychological breakdown of identity caused by these imposed aesthetic standards. It investigates how racial and gender stereotypes create fragmented identities and deep-seated internalized racism. This dissertation utilizes a qualitative analytical method grounded in Black feminist theory to examine intersecting oppressions. The text is analyzed through the conceptual lens of "Performativity" to trace how race and gender converge. The analysis reveals that white beauty ideals foster intense internalized racism, leading directly to self-loathing. The study exposes how the Black female is forced into a performance of oppression that shatters her sense of self. The findings prove that dismantling patriarchal structures and systemic racism is vital to reclaiming Black female identity. This study connects intersectional trauma to liberation, showing that disrupting dominant norms is essential for healing.
