| dc.description.abstract | This study aimed to evaluate the quality of the essential oil extracted from a sample of Dittrichia viscosa L. collected from a herbal shop in the Ouargla region, specifically in El Khafji. A laboratory-based methodology was adopted and consisted of three main stages. First, three different extraction techniques were applied: hydrodistillation, the Clevenger apparatus, and Soxhlet extraction using an organic solvent, in order to compare their efficiency in terms of yield, color, odor, purity, and solvent type. Second, the chemical constants of the essential oil were determined, including the acid value, saponification value, ester value, peroxide value, iodine value, in addition to pH measurement. Third, the chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS). The results revealed noticeable differences among the three extraction methods with respect to the investigated characteristics. Moreover, some chemical constants, particularly the saponification value and iodine value, showed values that differed from the standards established by the Codex Alimentarius and the International Olive Council (IOC), suggesting that the oil may have undergone deterioration due to improper storage or refining, and therefore may be unsuitable for food consumption. Furthermore, GC–MS analysis identified 97 compound with varying relative abundances, among which Rotundifolone was the predominant constituent. These findings highlight the complexity of the essential oil's chemical composition and emphasize the importance of monitoring the quality of medicinal plants marketed locally. | - |
