This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aqueous basil extracts (Ocimum basilicum L.) on the germination of two date palm cultivars (Phoenix dactylifera L.), Deglet Nour and Ghars. The main objective was to determine whether these natural extracts could improve seed germination performance, particularly final germination percentage, mean germination time, and germination speed index. The aqueous extracts were prepared from fresh basil leaves and applied at different concentrations: 0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 5%, in comparison with a control treated with distilled water. The seeds were germinated in Petri dishes under controlled laboratory conditions. The results showed that, for the Deglet Nour cultivar, the different concentrations of aqueous basil extract did not induce significant differences in the three studied parameters, despite some numerical variations. For the Ghars cultivar, final germination percentage and mean germination time were not significantly affected by the treatments. However, the germination speed index was significantly improved by moderate extract concentrations, particularly 0.5%, 1%, and 2%, with the best response observed at 2%. These findings indicate that the effect of aqueous basil extract depends on both the cultivar and the applied concentration. Therefore, the extract cannot be considered a general germination stimulant for date palm seeds. Nevertheless, it may have potential interest in accelerating germination in some cultivars, especially Ghars. Further studies are needed to confirm these results, optimize the effective concentration, characterize the chemical composition of the extract, and assess its effect on early seedling growth.-
