| dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential of a hydroethanolic extract prepared from the aerial parts of Cornulaca monacantha Delile collected in south-eastern Algeria. Qualitative phytochemical screening revealed strong positive reactions for polyphenols, flavonoids and terpenoids (+++), together with a moderate positive reaction for saponins (++). The total phenolic content was 21.79 ± 0.50 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram of extract, while the total flavonoid content was 8.42 ± 0.27 mg rutin equivalents per gram of extract and the total antioxidant capacity was 17.43 ± 0.42 mg ascorbic acid equivalents per gram of extract. The low coefficients of variation, ranging from 2.31% to 3.20%, indicated good analytical repeatability. In the ABTS assay, the extract exhibited an IC50 of 185.93 µg/mL, compared with 41.62 µg/mL for ascorbic acid. In contrast, the extract did not reach 50% DPPH inhibition within the tested concentration range; its IC50 was therefore correctly reported as >1000 µg/mL. These findings demonstrate an assay-dependent antioxidant response, with a markedly stronger response in the ABTS assay than in the DPPH assay. Overall, the extract exhibited a coherent phytochemical profile and moderate antioxidant potential. However, the current findings, obtained using cell-free chemical systems, do not demonstrate hepatoprotective efficacy, cellular safety or oral safety. Further LC-MS/MS characterization, cytotoxicity testing and oxidative-stress studies in hepatic cell models are therefore required before its development as a standardized botanical ingredient for liver-function support can be considered. | en_US |
