| dc.description.abstract | This dissertation examines the impact of technology and industrial civilization on British society during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It traces the transformation of British social structures from an agrarian economy to an advanced industrial and post-industrial society, analyzing how technological innovations including steam power, electricity, the railway, the telegraph, the telephone, and domestic appliances reshaped labour relations, class structures, urbanization, daily life, education, gender roles, and cultural values. The study adopts a historical and analytical methodology, drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources to assess both the material gains and social costs of industrial progress. The dissertation concludes that technological development functioned as an ambivalent historical force: it enhanced productivity, mobility, communication, and living standards while simultaneously producing unemployment, class inequalities, regional decline, gender tensions, and environmental damage. The study emphasizes that the effects of technology on society cannot be understood in isolation from the structures of power, class, and political choice through which technological change was managed and distributed. | en_US |
