The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementing drinking water with local plant extracts (fenugreek, date palm, white wormwood, and their mixture) on the zootechnical performance of Cobb 500 broiler chickens reared under Saharan conditions in the Ouargla region. The study also aimed to characterize the physicochemical, phytochemical, and antioxidant properties of the extracts in order to assess their potential as natural alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters. The trial was conducted over a 45-day period using 150 chicks divided into five groups. Zootechnical performance parameters (body weight, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, production index, and mortality rate), as well as the physicochemical, phytochemical, and antioxidant characteristics of the plant extracts, were evaluated. The results showed that the mixture of plant extracts yielded the best overall performance, with a final body weight of 3,077.3 g, a feed conversion ratio of 1.92, a production index of 344.2, and the lowest mortality rate (3.33%). Phytochemical analyses revealed the presence of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and saponins, associated with noteworthy antioxidant activity. In conclusion, the combined use of these local plant extracts appears to be a promising strategy for improving the zootechnical performance of broiler chickens while reducing the reliance on antibiotic additives in poultry production.
