Attitudes Towards Code-Switching In The Algerian Media A Study of YouTube Podcasts

Abstract

The present study aims at investigating the sociolinguistic dynamics and attitudes towards code-switching within the context of Algerian YouTube podcasts. The research specifically examines the evolving linguistic hierarchy as English begins to compete with the traditional Arabic-French bilingualism in digital discourse. To address the research questions and test the hypotheses, a descriptive mixed-methods approach was selected. Two research tools were utilized: a structured questionnaire administered to 99 Algerian podcast consumers and semi-structured interviews with two distinct content creators. The results of the study confirm that code-switching is perceived by a vast majority of the audience as a vital reflection of "Algerianité" and multicultural identity rather than a linguistic deficiency. Furthermore, the findings reveal a significant shift toward a trilingual hybridity, where English enjoys high prestige and is strategically employed by creators for global engagement and pedagogical scaffolding. This research sheds light on the potential of code-switching as a recognized communicative competence and underscores the vibrant transformation of the Algerian linguistic landscape in the digital era.

La présente étude vise à explorer les dynamiques sociolinguistiques et les attitudes face à l'alternance codique dans le contexte des podcasts algériens sur YouTube. Plus précisément, elle examine l'évolution de la hiérarchie linguistique, l'anglais entrant en concurrence avec le bilinguisme arabo-français traditionnel dans le discours numérique. Afin de répondre aux questions de recherche et de tester les hypothèses, une approche descriptive mixte a été privilégiée. Deux outils de recherche ont été utilisés : un questionnaire structuré administré à 99 auditeurs algériens de podcasts et des entretiens semi-directifs avec deux créateurs de contenu. Les résultats confirment que l'alternance codique est perçue par une large majorité d'auditeurs comme un reflet essentiel de l'« algérianité » et de l'identité multiculturelle, plutôt que comme une déficience linguistique. De plus, les résultats révèlent une évolution significative vers une hybridité trilingue, où l'anglais jouit d'un grand prestige et est stratégiquement employé par les créateurs pour favoriser l'engagement international et l'étayage pédagogique. Cette recherche met en lumière le potentiel de l'alternance codique en tant que compétence communicative reconnue et souligne la transformation dynamique du paysage linguistique algérien à l'ère numérique.

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف الديناميكيات الاجتماعية اللغوية والاتجاهات نحو التناوب اللغوي في سياق البودكاست الجزائري على يوتيوب. ويتناول البحث تحديدًا تطور التسلسل الهرمي اللغوي مع بدء اللغة الإنجليزية في منافسة الثنائية اللغوية التقليدية العربية والفرنسية في الخطاب الرقمي. وللإجابة على أسئلة البحث واختبار الفرضيات، تم اختيار منهجية وصفية مختلطة. استُخدمت أداتين بحثيتين: استبيان مُهيكل وُزِّع على 99 مستمعًا جزائريًا للبودكاست، ومقابلات شبه مُهيكلة مع اثنين من مُنشئي المحتوى. وتؤكد نتائج الدراسة أن غالبية الجمهور ينظر إلى التناوب اللغوي على أنه انعكاس حيوي للهوية الجزائرية والتعددية الثقافية، وليس قصورًا لغويًا. علاوة على ذلك، تكشف النتائج عن تحول ملحوظ نحو هجين ثلاثي اللغات، حيث تحظى اللغة الإنجليزية بمكانة مرموقة ويستخدمها المُنشئون استراتيجيًا للتواصل العالمي وتوفير الدعم التربوي. يسلط هذا البحث الضوء على إمكانات التبديل اللغوي ككفاءة تواصلية معترف بها ويؤكد على التحول الحيوي للمشهد اللغوي الجزائري في العصر الرقمي.
