Abstract: Rare earths are used as doping agents because of their many transitions in the visible and the infra-red and of their relative insensitivity to the matrix into which are introduced. Rare earth doped glasses are used as an active integrates components in telecommunication, like lasers and optical amplifiers. The spectroscopic study of rare earth doped glasses provides information on various parameters (probability of transition, lifetime, absorption cross section, emission cross section…) which are significant in the active optical components realization. The aim of this work is the study of the rare earth effect in glasses. For that a general synthesis on rare earth doped glasses was realized, taking into account actives ions concentration and spectroscopic parameters: lifetime and emission cross section, to choose a better candidate in term of the gain. Silicates and phosphates glasses have interesting spectroscopic properties.
