Abstract: Several agronomic researchs have highlighted the importance of growth substrate on the production and development of quality plants in aboveground nurseries, however, little research is available on the influence of growth substrate on the evolution of produced plants after transplanting in the ground. For this reason, the present study was conducted to test the influence of the substrate used in the nursery on the vegetative growth and quality of okra plants obtained after transplantation and to conduct the comparison to direct seeding. The results obtained showed from work undertaken, under experimental conditions, that okra plant produced from direct seeding show better growth parameters (plant height, dry biomass of the aerial part, root and whole plant) in comparaison to plants from transplanting (whatever the type of substrate studied, with incorporation of compost or not with regard to the reference substrate: peat). These results suggest that direct seeding of okra is still the best alternative production without resorting to the nursery stage.
